Razz takes a fair share of needling as a game that can make a grumpy person out of a normally laid back player. Always trying to make the worst poker hand has a way of doing that to perfectly reasonable people. That didn’t stop the WCOOP 2015 Razz Championship event from drawing a nice turnout that turned into a very talented final table. MITS 304 did not seem to be enjoying himself late but outlasted former WCOOP champ krakukra to capture the title.
The $1,050 buy-in tournament drew 156 players and 40 of them used the single re-entry option before registration closed for the day. They built up a prize pool worth $196,000 and the last 20 players pocketed a piece of it. They played through 16 full levels before the remaining players took an overnight rest.
There were still 35 players around when the tournament was paused for the evening. WTFOMFGOAO went into the break with the chip lead but several top players would try to chase him down including nine-time COOP winner Calvin “cal42688” Anderson sitting in the top five. Other big names returning included Dzmitry “Colisea” Urbanovich, Mike “goleafsgoeh” Leah, Connor “blanconegro” Drinan, Adam “Adamyid” Owen, Sami ‘Lrslzk’ Kelopuro and Team PokerStars stud Jason “jcarverpoker” Somerville.
The first order of business after the restart was getting the field into the money. Nearly two hours after action kicked things back off, they hit the money bubble with 21 players remaining and went into hand-for-hand mode. It didn’t take long to complete the deal and it was Anderson crashing out against Urbanovich in a battle of the COOP champs.
They put another two hours in the books before it was time to figure out who was going to sit at the final table. The limits were high and several players took their turns getting in a short stack only to double up. The tough run of Somerville ended with him catching a King to earn the bring-in twice in a row with less than one big bet.
The third hand saw Somerville under one small bet when he called Fred_Brink’s complete to put himself all-in with (10♣5♥)8♣ against (10♠2♦)7♠. Somerville hit a T-8 on 7th street but Fred_Brinks was a little better with his (10♠2♦)7♠6♠7♣A♦9♠ for a 9-7 knockout.
Despite the absence of Somerville, it was still a stacked group of successful players at the final table. Natasha “natashab86” Barbour owns one WSOP Circuit ring and captured the Women’s Event during the 2016 PCA series in the Bahamas. Dzmitry “Colisea” Urbanovich owns four COOP titles including one earlier this series in Omaha/8 Event #25.
Fred_Brink has a Razz title from WCOOP 2011, krakukra won the 8-Game Mix event during WCOOP 2015, korjae picked up the SCOOP H.O.R.S.E. title in 2014, and gordo16 earned his sole COOP title during the 2010 SCOOP series.
A very tough final table to conquer for the WCOOP title.

korjae finds bad river, eliminated in 8th
Stud games can really get moving with the extra round of betting and escalating limits. The chips were flying and korjae was the first get his chips in the middle to attempt a double up.
He shoved with (X-X)4♦ showing after krakukra completed with (X-X)A♠ and it was a quick call. korjae was ahead until 6th street with (2♣8♣)4♦J♠A♦8♠ against (6♠3♣)A♠5♣5♥Q♥ but krakukra drew 7♦ on 7th street to improve to 7-6 and korjae’s 9♣ was not good enough to keep him in the game.
gordo16 calls all the way down, eliminated in 7th
gordo16 was not the shortest stack remaining but found a big draw to get his chips mixed up. He completed with (X-X)6♣ and called a raise from Fred_Brink who was showing (X-X)7♥.
They took turns firing and calling bets until gordo16 was all-in with (7♣3♦)6♣10♠Q♥5♠5♣. gordo16 was drawing big most of the way but his T-7 was no good against Fred_Brink’s 9-7 with (5♥2♣)7♥K♦2♥3♥9♠.
Barbour pushes three tiny cards, eliminated in 6th
Two hands later, the fast-paced theme continued and krakukra was involved again. There were four bets in the middle between Barbour and himself to cap the action with Barbour all-in drawing nicely with (6♠4♣)5♠.
krakukra was too shabby himself with (6♥2♦)7♠ and caught all low cards to finish with (6♥2♦)7♠5♣8♠2♣3♥ for a 7-6. Barbour bricked out though had a shot as her board finished (6♠4♣)5♠Q♠J♥3♠Q♦ to finish her night in 6th place.
Urbanovich runs into tough draw, eliminated in 5th
Double SCOOP/double WCOOP Urbanovich knows when to push the action and he did just that when he was short stacked with four nice cards. He completed with (X-X)6♦, called a raise from Fred_Brink showing (X-X)6♣, and called all-in after he caught 5♥ on 4th street.
It was a quick call from Fred_Brink with the big draw (A♦3♣)6♣5♥ and Urbanovich needed to hit with (10♣3♥)6♦9♠. He made a T-9 courtesy of the 4♥ on 5th street but that was the best he could field. Fred_Brink had plenty of good cards sitting in the deck, he caught two big cards, but the 10♦ on 6th street was good enough for the better T-6 to send Urbanovich out.
WTFOMFGOAO runs out of time, eliminated in 4th
The four-handed battle quickly turned into a game of the “haves” and the “have nots”. WTFOMFGOAO and Fred_Brink saw both their stacks steadily moving over towards krakukra and MITS 304 so WTFOMFGOAO tried to do something about that situation.
He kept pushing the action against krakukra until he was all-in with T-8 on 5th street with (8♣7♥)4♦2♠10♥. krakukra was drawing live with (8♦2♣)5♠4♠Q♣ and his 6♥ on 6th street had WTFOMFGOAO drawing dead to 4th place when he picked up 4♣.
Fred_Brink on the brink, eliminated in 3rd
That hand left Fred_Brink as the last player looking up at the two big stacks, his 100K eclipsed as the other two were near 2 million each. He forced the action a few hands later and kept ramming against MITS 304 until he was all-in with (K♠K♣)2♣A♥Q♣.
MITS 304 called with better hand (8♦3♦)Q♦6♠10♥ and the J♦ on 6th street locked up his J-T. Fred_Brink caught two small cards but was drawing dead on 6th to set up the heads-up battle.
MITS 304: (8♦3♦)Q♦6♠10♥J♦8♣
MITS 304 denies second WCOOP to krakukra in Event #61
Seat 1: MITS 304 (1,937,560 in chips)
Seat 2: krakukra (1,982,440 in chips)
MITS 304 and krakukra began the final part of the tournament with near identical stacks and MITS 304 was interested in a deal. Apparently, he was getting very bored with the stud game and asked if krakukra might like to chop up the remaining prize pool.
krakukra would only talk if he was guaranteed extra cash and MITS 304’s leverage was gone with his statement of boredom. They continued to play and the chips quickly migrated to MITS 304 with only a few hands going krakukra’s way.
The final hand saw MITS 304 push the action all the way when he had T-8 by 6th street. krakukra was drawing live to 9-6 on 6th street but the best krakukra could hit was J-9 on the river for the second best hand. It sent the pot and championship to MITS 304 while krakukra fell one spot short of his second WCOOP title.
MITS 304: (5♦2♦)8♣6♠10♦Q♥5♥
It was a great run by the Cyprus grinder even though he seemed to be over Razz at the end. Not an uncommon feeling but he was rewarded for his persistence with a WCOOP title and nearly $40,000.
