WCOOP 2015: theNERDguy geeks out with win in PLO Hi/Lo Championship (Event #51 $1,050 PLO8 6-Max)

September 23, 2015

Yuri “theNERDguy” Martins has gone deep in several COOP events, including a second-place finish in last year’s WCOOP Main Event, a runner-up in a TCOOP, and a third-place in a SCOOP. Despite the deep runs, theNERDguy had yet to break through and actually win a COOP. All of that finally changed when theNERDguy took down WCOOP Event #61 to win a first bracelet in the PLO Hi/Lo Championship.

2015 WCOOP Event #51 $1,050 PL Omaha Hi/Lo Championship (6-Max) attracted 272 runners. They created a prize pool worth $272,000, which smashed the $50K guarantee. The top 36 places paid out with $59,840.00 set aside to the champion.

Day 1 ended with 18 players remaining in the middle of Level 21 with blinds at 2K/4K. Venezuela’s jj20002 led with 318K and theNERDguy (Brazil) was right behind with 311K.

Team PokerStars Pros George Danzer and Eugene Katchalov both cashed, but busted late on Day 1. Danzer finished in 28th and Katchlov in 27th place. They both earned $2,040.

Day 2’s action went quick. In around 15 minutes, the field was thinned from 18 to 12. With 12 to go, theNERDguy led with 368K.

With 10 to go, jj20002 held the lead with 540K but the play slowed down. On the final table bubble, jj20002 passed 880K. The final seven played an elongated bubble. During that extended time, theNERDguy battled jj20002 for the lead, as crazy169 clung to life as the short stack. After surviving numerous all-in attempts, crazy169 could not dodge another bullet. Without a qualifying low hand, crazy169 failed to double up with A♦8♣8♥3♠ against nizmo jiz’s A♥A♣6♦5♠. Bolivia’s crazy169 bubbled off the final table in seventh place.

Just last week, Martin “nizmo jiz” Kozlov went deep in Event #22. Meanwhile, omaha4rollz final tabled a WCOOP last year and onmybicycle was a runner-up at a 2013 WCOOP event.

HEADS-UP: theNERDguy (Brazil) vs. nizmo jiz (Australia)
Seat 2: nizmo jiz (661,900)
Seat 4: theNERDguy (2,058,100)

With two to go, theNERDguy held a 3-1 edge. But the two would play a rather lengthy heads-up match.

During the first thirty minutes of heads-up, theNERDguy stayed out in front, but was unable to knock off nizmo jiz. Meanwhile, nizmo jiz dominated the second half hour of heads-up to seize the lead.

An hour into heads-up… theNERDguy avoided an elimination and surged into a huge lead in the same hand. Without a qualifying low, theNERDguy doubled up with A♣J♠4♦2♠ against nizmo jiz’s 10♥8♥6♠3♠ and busted flush draw. theNERDguy won a 2.1M pot and nizmo jiz was reduced to 500K.
