WCOOP 2013: -Rebus1980- survives long battle to win Event #7 ($215 NL 5-Card Draw)

September 10, 2013

The game of 5-Card draw can summon up images of family poker games around the kitchen table or movies with badly filmed poker scenes complete with humorous string bets. None of those come to mind when playing the game for big money like the WCOOP Event #7 No Limit 5-Card Draw tournament.

This game was serious business as only the best take a shot at the game and 463 of them bought in for $215. This added up to a $92,600 and first place getting $17,918. Far more than the penny ante hands with the parents.

Mickey “mement_mori” Petersen had the best chance to continue the great run in WCOOP with a deep run but ran out of steam in 26th. Ami “UhhMee” Barer was already having a nice run this series with a final table in Event #3 and made it to this final table looking to add a WCOOP title to his 2012 SCOOP win (he also holds an FTOPS title from 2010).

Barer wasn’t the only player looking to add to their virtual trophy collection as Gribnogrib was also in mix and holds a SCOOP title from 2012. The final table took 30 minutes and 37 rounds of hand-for-hand play until a severely short-stacked Do4Love was knocked out just before the 10th break of the tournament.

Final Table chip counts:

Seat 1: Gribnogrib (478,685 in chips)
Seat 2: -Rebus1980- (173,542 in chips)
Seat 3: AsjBaaaf (305,012 in chips)
Seat 4: Iral (712,743 in chips)
Seat 5: UhhMee (149,189 in chips)
Seat 6: Parasol6Ka (495,829 in chips)

Blind Level: 4,000/8,000 with 2,000 ante

The players came into the final table with no one in desperate straits due to the deep stacks but Barer began on the short-stack. He was able to double quickly to slowly move into the chiplead.

AsjBaaaf’s queens are no good, eliminated in 6th

AsjBaaaf was on the bad side of Barer’s move up the leaderboard and was left with 55,580 behind. They all ended up in the middle after Gribnogrib opened for a min-raise.

They were heads up with AsjBaaaf drawing 3 cards and Gribnogrib pulling just 1. The drama was quick and painless, a joy of 5-Card Draw, and AsjBaaaf tabled Q♦4♣3♦Q♥5♦ for a pair of Queens but was no match for two pair K♠4♦K♥2♠4♠ to create the first knockout. AsjBaaaf ran into some bad luck late and was eliminated in 6th place for $3,148.

Iral goes from penthouse to basement, eliminated in 5th

Iral began the final table with a comfortable chiplead but lost most of those through a series of unfortunate hands against -Rebus1980- at the start.

Holding just 41,964 before Iral moved all-in after a raised from Gribnogrib under the gun. Parasol6Ka called in the big blind and Gribnogrib the final 10,464 for a three way pot.

Each player drew three cards before both Parasol6Ka and Gribnogrib checked to set up the showdown.

Parasol6Ka: 10♦J♦3♦Q♣Q♥
Gribnogrib: 8♣4♦8♠4♣K♠

With Gribnogrib showing two pair, Iral just mucked the hand and was sent to the rail in 5th place without showing a card.

UhhMee comes up short, eliminated in 4th

Ami “UhhMee” Barer began the final table with a great shot at adding a WCOOP title to his list of accomplishments and held the chiplead early during four-handed play. His lead shrank quickly as he lost back to back four-digit hands against Parasol6Ka and another big one against Gribnogrib.

UhhMee didn’t waste time with the small stack and shoved for 95,902 from under the gun. Parasol6Ka three-bet to isolate before UhhMee drew three cards to Parasol6Ka’s one.

UhhMee was sitting with Q♣3♠5♣8♣Q♠ and a pair of Queens which were no good when faced with two pair 3♥3♦4♥9♦9♠. UhhMee’s great 2013 WCOOP run continued but fell short of adding a WCOOP title in 4th place for $6,852.

Parasol6Ka swaps chiplead, eliminated in 3rd

The three remaining players, all Russian, went to battle and they all took turns holding the chiplead. There were a few prompts to ask about a possible deal but none of the talk turned series. It took more than 30 minutes to send the next person out of the tournament.

Parasol6Ka’s turn as the chipleader ended when Gribnogrib won a 425,000 pot after Parasol6Ka checked-raised with Ace-high and was called by a pair of Aces.

After being slowly blinded down, Parasol6Ka moved all-in from the button for 76,449 and -Rebus1980- called in the big blind. Each drew 3 cards and -Rebus1980- hit a set with Queens on the draw to beat Parasol6Ka’s pair of sevens.

Parasol6Ka was the first of the three Russians sent to the rail in 3rd place for $9,954.

-Rebus1980- wins long heads up battle to win Event #7 and $17,918

Gribnogrib (1,158,319 in chips)
-Rebus1980- (1,156,681 in chips)

The heads up match began with the players virtually even with each holding more than 57 big blinds. The two used those chips with skill and they played more than 80 hands to hammer out a new champion.

Gribnogrib has several great shots to pick up the elusive SCOOP title as they swapped the lead several times. -Rebus1980- took command by winning a 612,000 pot with a full house and it was over just two hands later.

-Rebus1980- minraised from the button and Gribnogrib called before drawing 3. -Rebus1980- drew 1 card and bet 62,500 after a check, which was in turn raised to 150,000. The third and final bet of the tournament was -Rebus1980- putting Gribnogrib all-in to see two huge hands.

Gribnogrib hit a trip Nines with 9♣4♥6♠9♠9♦ but they were no match against 4♣A♦A♥5♥A♠ and trip Aces. Gribnogrib was in a great position for a double but was unlucky to be eliminated in 2nd place.

-Rebus1980- is the newest WCOOP champion after a long tournament and picking up $17,918 along the way.
