WCOOP 2013: Bassysaffari best, talonchick takes fifth in Event #33 ($320 8-Game)

September 19, 2013

Another day at the World Championship of Online Poker and once again we saw a Team PokerStars Pro on the final table. Adrienne “talonchick” Rowsome was in fact supposed to be hosting the final table of WCOOP Event #33, but we’re sure she was much happier playing as she made a great run at the title. Rowsome eventually lost a big coin flip to depart in 5th place. If the coin had landed the other way, it might have been a different story, but in the end it was the United Kingdom’s Bassysaffari who claimed the title and $36,519.00 in prize money.

The event was the $320 8-Game Event which attracted a field of 658 players and a prize pool of $197,400 to surge past the advertised guarantee.

Among the starters were several members of Team PokerStars including Jonathan Duhamel, Eugene Katchalov, Bertrand Grospellier, Marcel Luske, Matthias de Meulder, Alex Kravchenko, Martin Hrubý, Naoya Kihara, George Danzer and Chris Moneymaker but they all missed out on the cash. The 2003 World Champion came the closest but fell in 88th place with only the top 84 finishing in the money.

Wizardwizard from Canada was the bubble in 85th place as the remaining players had guaranteed at least $532.98 in prize money.

Stephen Chidwick (82nd – $532.98), Michael Guzzardi (38th – $908.04) and Dan Kelly (20th – $1,381.80) were a few of the notables to cash, however there was one red spade left in the field making a deep run at the WCOOP title.

Adrienne “talonchick” Rowsome was one of the chip leaders as the final two tables formed, but found herself in a tough seat with the overall chip leader in Brazil’s ninototoroko to her direct right. The two tangled in quite a few pots with ninototoroko gaining the upper hand to grab a big chip lead as Rowsome slipped back into the pack.

When the short-stacked el_batong could only manage a pair of kings in Seven-Card Stud against ninototoroko’s jacks and nines, our final table of six was formed as follows:

Final Table Line Up
Seat 1: Sykoen (603,826 in chips)
Seat 2: Chillolini (533,184 in chips)
Seat 3: batoelrob (212,377 in chips)
Seat 4: Adrienne “talonchick” Rowsome (368,798 in chips)
Seat 5: Bassysaffari (336,663 in chips)
Seat 6: ninototoroko (1,235,152 in chips)

Rowsome had made it through to the final table, and she was thankful to be playing rather than hosting!

talonchick said, “thanks Naoya!!!”
talonchick said, “(especially big thanks for Naoya taking over because I was supposed to host)”

batoelrob was on the short stack and needed to make a move. batoelrob survived one all-in clash where just a pair of deuces was enough in Seven-Card Stud Hi/Lo for a double up, and then survived a second hand when taking the low in a chopped pot.

However when No Limit Holdem rolled around, batoelrob’s time was up. ninototoroko opened with a raise before batoelrob three-bet shoved all in with Q♥K♦. ninototoroko made the call with 2♥2♦ and the race was on. The board of Q♣5♣2♠3♥8♥ hit both players but a set of lucky ducks for ninototoroko was too strong. batoelrob took home $5,922.00 for 6th place.

Sykoen landed a big double up in No Limit Holdem against Chillolini. Their hole cards were polar opposites but somehow they collided on the turn:

It’s not often you see pocket aces and 3♠2♠ go to war but there it was, as Sykoen collected the double up.

Just a few moments later and No Limit Holdem claimed another victim as Rowsome’s tournament was brought to an abrupt end. Bassysaffari opened with a min-raise before Rowsome jammed all in from the big blind for almost 28 big blinds. Bassysaffari called with J♦J♣ as we had a huge make-or-break coin flip for both players as Rowsome tabled A♣K♥. The board arrived 9♣3♥J♠3♦3♣ to fill up Bassysaffari with a full house to eliminate Rowsome in 5th place for $9,870.00 in prize money.

Next to fall was Chillolini who raised and then committed in Limit Holdem with 10♣9♣ against ninototoroko’s Q♣J♦. The board landed 3♣Q♠2♠2♥J♠ to pair up ninototoroko twice and leave Chillolini to depart in 4th place for $13,818.00.

ninototoroko was well out in front with Sykoen next best and Bassysaffari on the short stack, but that would swing around as the three-handed battle unfolded. Most of Bassysaffari’s pots were uncontested as the aggressive, small ball approach saw Bassysaffari climb back into contention.

At one point Bassysaffari won nine pots in a row, with a couple of them significant, to take control of the contest.

Sykoen, a former Sunday Million winner, eventually found a spot to make a stand with aces in the hole in a hand of Seven-Card Stud but the luck went the way of Bassysaffari:

Sykoen made aces up on the river, but Bassysaffari caught the perfect ten for trips for the knockout blow. Sykoen collected $20,233.50 for 3rd place.

Heads-up chip counts
Seat 5: Bassysaffari (2,218,656 in chips)
Seat 6: ninototoroko (1,071,344 in chips)

Bassysaffari held a two-to-one chip lead over ninototoroko but the former SCOOP title winner drew first blood winning a nice pot in Seven-Card Stud with aces and tens to get things back close to even.

However when Bassysaffari made a deceptive queen-high straight in Seven-Card Stud, and got value on every street, ninototoroko was in trouble and, three hands later, it was all over.

Again it was Seven-Card Stud with Bassysaffari allowed a double bet with a pair on board on fourth. ninototoroko raised the action on fifth street, before Bassysaffari was the one raising on sixth to put ninototoroko all in. When the final boards were spread ninototoroko showed (10♦8♥) 8♦Q♣K♣J♠ (7♣) for an unimproved pair of eights as Bassysaffari revealed (3♥A♥) 4♠4♥9♦A♠ (5♠) for aces and fours to take down the victory! ninototoroko collected $27,241.20 for 2nd place as the WCOOP title headed to the United Kingdom with Bassysaffari winning $36,519.00. Congratulations!
