Vlad “dariepoker” Darie victorious in 2/25/14 Super Tuesday, earns $120,960

February 26, 2014

This week’s Super Tuesday attracted a field of 600-plus players for the fourth straight time, the first time that’s happened in the history of the weekly $1,050 no-limit hold’em event. (The best previous streak of 600-plus player fields was three last November.) A total of 640 came out this week, and after more than 11 hours it was Vlad “dariepoker” Darie of Romania prevailing to earn a huge $120,960 first prize — one of the biggest in Super Tuesday history!

From 640 to 9

That field meant a prize pool of $640,000 — more than twice the $300K guarantee — ultimately divided between the top 72 finishers.

It took more than five hours and 45 minutes for the money bubble to burst, with pezler06 becoming the unfortunate 73rd-place finisher while Chris “Moorman1” Moorman snuck into the money in 72nd ($2,112) after being ousted by Simon “pokerbrat13” Charette.

By then Stor81 led the way with more than 160,000, with TheFish77, Joe “ender555” Ebanks, and Vlad “dariepoker” Darie sitting near the top of the counts.

About two hours later they were down to 18 with CrownUpGuy having built a big lead with more than 570,000 with calvin7v the nearest challenger with just over 310,000. And forty-five minutes later CrownUpGuy would still be leading after nine more players hit the rail.

kingsanti (18th), sinergetic69 (17th), and Sergio “zcedrick” Aido (16th) each earned $5,120. Aidan “whereisdonny” Tam (15th), lo co co87 (14th), and Simon “pokerbrat13” Charette (13th) made $6,400 apiece. And Dan “mrGR33N13” Colman (12th), Joe “ender555” Ebanks (11th), and last week’s fifth-place finisher in the Super Tuesday Ace0fDiamond (10th) just missed the final table, each taking away $7,680.

They were down to nine.

Seat 1: Stor81 (Denmark) — 143,490
Seat 2: calvin7v (Finland) — 402,902
Seat 3: VernonH (Germany) — 135,768
Seat 4: Vlad “dariepoker” Darie (Romania) — 633,476
Seat 5: teckidtq (Canada) — 87,962
Seat 6: MESQUEUBR (Brazil) — 152,716
Seat 7: Alex “Schildy1984” Debus (Austria) — 338,867
Seat 8: CrownUpGuy (Austria) — 759,867
Seat 9: BetBetShove9 (United Kingdom) — 544,952

Queens stop both MESQUEUBR and Stor81

On the seventh hand of the final table, the blinds were 3,200/6,400 when MESQUEUBR raised to 12,800 from middle position then Alexander “Schildy1984” Debus reraised to 26,850 from a seat over. It folded back around to MESQUEUBR who pushed all in for 126,016 and Debus made the call.

It was J♥10♥ for MESQUEUBR who needed help against Schildy1984’s Q♥Q♠. But the board came 7♦7♣2♦Q♦8♠ to give Debus a full house and knock MESQUEUBR out in ninth.

Next to go was Stor81 in eighth whose last hand began with a 2x raise to 12,800 from middle position. Next to act, calvin7v reraised to 26,666, then when all folded Stor81 pushed for 127,690 and calvin7v called. Stor81 had a made hand with J♠J♦, but again the all-in player was up against the same Q♥Q♠, and when the board came 9♠Q♣A♦8♠6♣ calvin7v had a set of queens and Stor81 had been eliminated in eighth.

Four hands, three knockouts

The remaining seven made it to the nine-hour break, then three players fell in rapid succession to carve the field to four.

The blinds had increased to 4,000/8,000 (with a 1,000 ante) when a hand arose that saw teckidtq open-raise to 48,062 from the button and get one caller in Alex “Schildy1984” Debus in the small blind. teckidtq had A♠3♦ and Debus A♣10♣, and five cards later — 4♥2♣A♥8♣J♣ — teckidtq’s worse kicker meant a seventh-place finish.

Meanwhile CrownUpGuy had slipped back to a below average stack and two hands later opened for 16,000 from the button. BetBetShove9 reraised to 36,666 from the small blind, CrownUpGuy pushed all in for 185,457, and BetBetShove9 called.

CrownUpGuy had Q♠J♦ and needed to improve to survive against BetBetShove9’s A♠10♣. But the K♠A♥2♣Q♣5♠ board gave BetBetShove9 the better pair, and CrownUpGuy’s run had ended in sixth.

Then on the very next hand, BetBetShove9 raised to 16,000 from the button and was called by both blinds — calvin7v (small) and VernonH (big).

The flop came 7♣9♣4♠ and it checked to BetBetShove9 who bet 22,222. calvin7v called, then VernonH raised all in for 168,536 total. BetBetShove9 folded to the raise, but calvin7v called right away.

calvin7v: 7♦7♠
VernonH: K♣Q♣

calvin7v had a set of sevens while VernonH needed a non-pairing club to make a winning flush. But the turn was the 3♦ and river the K♥, and suddenly just four remained.

Schildy1984 shoves, shut down in fourth

After that flurry of activity calvin7v had taken the lead with more than 1.18 million, BetBetShove9 was next with about 956,000, Vlad “dariepoker” Darie was in third position with just over 705,000, and Alex “Schildy1984” Debus was fourth with about 356,000.

Those four would continue through the 10-hour break with BetBetShove9 edging ahead of calvin7v. Still the short stack of the four, Alex “Schildy1984” Debus then raised 2x to 28,000 from the cutoff/UTG and got callers in BetBetShove9 (button) and Vlad “dariepoker” Darie (big blind). The flop came K♥9♦3♥. Darie checked, Debus bet 44,550, BetBetShove9 called, and Darie folded.

The turn then brought the 2♠. This time Schildy1984 checked, BetBetShove9 bet 72,222, Schildy1984 check-raised all in for 348,504, and BetBetShove9 called.

Debus had K♦10♣ for top pair of kings, but BetBetShove9 had K♣9♣ for top two pair, and after the 7♠ fell on the river, Debus was out in fourth.

calvin7v KO’d in third

Another half-hour passed, then with the blinds at 9,000/18,000 it was Vlad “dariepoker” Darie raising to 36,000 from the button, then calvin7v pushed all in for 454,681 from the big blind and Darie called.

calvin7v had 7♥6♥ and dariepoker K♣Q♦. The flop brought a seven, but a king as well coming 7♣K♦10♠. The turn was the K♠ to improve Darie to trips, making the 5♠ river no matter and sending calvin7v out in third.

Darie beats out BetBetShove9

Heads-up play began with Vlad “dariepoker” Darie in front with 1,884,045 to BetBetShove9’s 1,315,955. They battled another 10 minutes to reach the 11-hour break with BetBetShove9 having drawn even and pushed out ahead slightly.

But after the break it was Darie moving back in front, then increasing the lead further to move up over 2.6 million while BetBetShove9 slipped under 600,000.

Then with the blinds at 12,500/25,000 it was Darie raising to 50,000 from the button, BetBetShove9 shoving for 534,962, and Darie calling.

dariepoker had A♠8♥ while BetBetShove9 had also picked up an ace with A♥4♣. Both would pair their big cards, but the kickers played as the board ran out 5♥A♣Q♣10♠2♦ to give Darie the win.
