UKIPT Coventry: Day 3, level 25 & 26 (blinds 25,000-50,000)

April 11, 2010

9pm: Stella win for Belgian Gilles Augustus
After about 20 hands of small pot poker you could feel a big pot brewing and it duly arrived with a big frothy, foamy head. Dave Jones opened for 125,000 from the small blind and Gilles Augustus moved all-in from the big blind. There wasn’t much of dwell up by Jones before the made the call sliding his 1.2m stack across the line. A double up here for the Brit would bring him seriously back into the heads up and make the stacks close to even.

Augustus: A♠K♠
Jones: A♥9♦

The final board of the tournament was K♣4♠6♥9♣5♦.
Gilles Augustus is your UKIPT Coventry main event winner, he’ll take £46,100 back to Belguim.

Augustus: A♠J♣

The board was A♦Q♣J♥3♠8♠ and Augustus made two-pair to eliminate Grech in third place. He’ll take home £16,100. As heads up play begins this is the current state of play is that Gilles Augustus has 4,400,000 and Dave Jones has 1,100,000. On the brief break before play starts Jones said with a wry grin, ‘Time to run good, I guess.’ –NW

8.35pm: Gilles grows greater at Grech’s expense
Joe Grech raised to 120,000 from the small blind and Gilles Augustus called from the big blind. They both checked the 10♦8♠3♦ flop. On the A♣ turn Joe check called a bet of 105,000. The river was the K♣. Again Grech checked it over to Augustus who fired a second barrel of 225,000. After asking the dealer to spread the pot Gech finally gave up on the hand. — NW

8.30pm: A catch up with Carter
Overnight chip leader Dan Carter didn’t get the rub of the green at this final table but still bagged 4th place in a 368 player field. We spoke to him this morning. — RD

8.25pm: Gilles bullying as the big stack
Three handed play has been dominated by Gilles Augustus. He appears to be putting particular pressure on Joe Grech. The Belgian has moved all-in over the top of several of Grech’s and Jones open raises. A reminder of the remaining payouts:

1st £46,000 (and a seat at the London EPT)
2nd £29,400
3rd £16,100

It’s a good display of big stack abuse. –NW

8.20pm: Got Carter
Left with just over half a big blind Dan Carter moved in the very next hand. Joe Grech completed from the small blind and Gilles Augustus checked his option. Both Grech and Augustus checked it down and Gilles’ 10♠7♠ made a better two pair than Carter’s 10♦5♦ on a tough Q♠7♠J♠10♣5♣ board. Carter is out in fourth winning £12,700. –NW

8.15pm: Dan Carter out in 4th place
The overnight chip leader Dan Carter has fallen in 4th place for £12,700. Details to come. — RD

8pm: Grechian 2000
Dan Carter moved all-in from the small blind and Joe Grech in the big blind made the call. There stacks were almost identical with Carter having Grech covered by just 24,000 chips.

Carter K♠6♠
Grech A♣9♥

Flop: 7♠3♠9♣
‘That’s given me a sweat,’ remarked Grech.

Turn: 10♦
Carter had 15 outs to eliminate Grech

River: 6♥
Grech doubled through and Carter was left with just 24,000. –NW

8pm: Augustus the even greater
New chip leader Gilles Augustus didn’t have to wait long to add more chips to his stack. On the hand after he doubled through Dave Jones he played a big pot against Paul Rigg. All the chips went in pre-flop and Rigg, who started the hand with a little under 800,000 was at risk.

Augustus: 10♣10♦
Rigg: 9♦9♥

There was no help for Rigg on the 4♦2♥Q♥ 5♣A♦ board and he was eliminated in fifth place for £10,200. Augustus has a huge, huge stack. –NW

8pm: Augustus the great
There must be something about returning from breaks, we’ve lost players on the first hand after each break today and on just the second hand after the dinner break we witnessed a massive pot.

On the turn of the 9♣3♦Q♣8♣ board Gilles Augustus bet 250,000 into Dave Jones who flat called. Augustus checked the 10♥ river to Jones who bet enough to set Augustus all-in and he did indeed make the call.

Augustus: A♣10♣
Jones: J♣J♦

After the hand Gilles is now your prohibitive chip leader with 2,500,000, Dave Jones now has 675,000. — NW

7.50pm: Play restarts
The players are back in their seats and ready to go. Dave Jones is our chip leader with 1.9m chips while Dan Carter has slipped to the short stack with 650,000. Carter definitely has the game to get back into the game though. — RD
