TCOOP 2017: Pocket pairs propel Lena900 in Event #44, $11+R NLHE (6-Max, Turbo, Splash)

January 26, 2017

It’s been a good week on PokerStars for Niklas “Lena900” Åstedt. The past Super Tuesday champ sat ninth in the TCOOP 2017 leaderboard coming into the day after he finished fourth in Event #38 yesterday and runner-up in Event #22 earlier this week. He guaranteed himself a move into second on the leaderboard by making the final table of Event #44 – and then took over the lead for TCOOP 2017 Player Of The Series with a victory.

Event #44, an $11+R 6-Max No-Limit Hold’em Turbo Splash tournament, kicked off at 11 a.m. ET and drew a field of 4,580 players before the end of late registration. Those players combined for 12,321 re-buys and 2,351 add-ons to bring the total prize pool up to $192,520. The top 641 finishers earned at least $95.04, with more than $27,000 scheduled for first place.

By 4:20 p.m. ET the field was down its final seven, and short-stacked unsepable called all-in in the big blind with Q♣ J♣ when PALbICH, the runner-up in last year’s TCOOP Event #29, jammed in the small blind. PALbICH’s K♣ 8♥ didn’t improve, but neither did unsepable’s hand, knocking the player from the Netherlands out on the final table bubble and leaving these six players to fight it out for the title:

Seat 1: ABORDAGE (8,902,008 in chips)
Seat 2: Serebity_p (15,367,863 in chips)
Seat 3: PALblCH (21,196,638 in chips)
Seat 4: Niklas “Lena900” Åstedt (14,540,512 in chips)
Seat 5: DeamCatchERS (13,150,171 in chips)
Seat 6: diw.2303 (22,658,808 in chips)

The 300K/600K/150K blinds and antes, and the prospect of them advancing every five minutes, left no room for anybody to get too comfortable. The volatility of the situation was underscored six hands in when ABORDAGE made a desperation shove in the small blind with Q♥ 6♠. Serebity_p called in the big blind with 9♣ 9♥ but was left with 7.9M chips when the Q♣ J♠ 7♠ J♥ K♥ board gave ABORDAGE a pair of queens. Lena900 had better fortune with a pocket pair three hands after that, shoving in the small blind with Q♦ Q♥ and having them hold against DeamCatchERS’s Q♣ 9♣ for a double to 23.5M chips.

DeamCatchERS, left with 3.3M after that loss, jammed from the small blind on the next hand with K♥ 5♠. Past Sunday Kickoff champion diw.2303 called with K♠ 9♦ and won out with a pair of deuces, K-9 kicker, on the 2♠ 2♥ 8♠ 3♠ J♥ board to knock DeamCatchERS out in sixth.

Serebity_p was next to go another six hands later. The Romanian player opened the betting all-in for 9.7M chips in the cutoff, holding A♥ 10♣, and Lena900 called in the big blind with A♣ A♠. The 4♣ 3♥ 6♣ 4♠ 3♣ board changed nothing, and Serebity_p left in fifth.

Lena900 edged into first place a few hands later, taking down a 15-big-blind pot from diw.2303 after raising in the small blind with 10♥ 9♥, calling a big-blind re-raise, and the checking down the entire A♥ 10♦ A♦ Q♥ 8♠ board to win with aces and tens against diw.2303’s 7♥ 4♦. But diw.2303 got those chips back and then some on the following hand after jamming on the button with 5♦ 5♥. PALbICH called all-in for 14.3M with A♥ 10♠ in the big blind and jumped into the lead with a pair of tens on the 8♠ 10♥ 4♠ flop, but the 5♣ turn made a set for diw.2303. The 6♣ river gave diw.2303 the 30M-chip pot, and PALbICH bowed out in fourth.

That gave diw.2303 the lead with 47.3M chips to Lena900’s 35M and ABORDAGE’s 13.3M as three-handed play began with blinds and antes at 500K/1M/250K. The two leaders switched positions a few times as the pots stayed small, but then Lena900’s K♣ K♠ lost out to ABORDAGE’s A♦ 10♦ thanks to two aces on the flop. That moved ABORDAGE into second place with 29.7M chips, a big blind ahead of Lena900 and five blinds behind diw.2303.

Another pocket pair of kings held up for Lena900 a few hands later, though the pot only grew to 10 big blinds with Lena900 out of position to diw.2303 and the 8♠ 8♦ 9♦ J♦ 10♦ board plenty dangerous. After five minutes’ worth of pots stolen before the flop, ABORDAGE opened the action all-in for 19.8M in the small blind, holding K♠ 9♠, and Lena900 called with 7♣ 7♦ in the big blind. Lena900 made a set on the 6♣ A♠ 7♠ flop and dodged the nut flush draw on the K♣ turn and 6♦ river, and ABORDAGE finished in third.

Lena900 had the edge as heads-up play began, 59.2M to 36.5M, and took down six pots in a one-minute span to move into the lead. Then one final coin flip settled the tournament. diw.2303 opened all-in for 20.4M on the button with 9♠ 8♦, Lena900 called with 2♥ 2♦, and the deuces held up on the 7♠ 5♥ Q♣ 4♠ 5♣ board to wrap up Event #44.

diw.2303’s take was $17,934.77, a strong prize for just five and a half hours of work. And Niklas “Lena900” Åstedt earned $27,439.61, his first TCOOP title, and 100 points on the Player Of The Series leaderboard to move ahead of caprioli for the lead. With three days remaining in TCOOP 2017 and lots of tough players left in the top 10, he’ll need to keep playing at his best to hold off the competition. Congratulations to both players for making a splash in this event!
