Super Tuesday: elmerixx tops Tomatee for $60K after heads-up deal

March 08, 2017

With more than $5 million in winnings, Tomi “elmerixx” Brouk is more than familiar with online poker tournament success. Tonight the past TCOOP runner-up and SCOOP and WCOOP finalist one-upped almost all of his past accomplishments at PokerStars, overcoming a lineup full of competitive players from around the world to earn a first career Super Tuesday victory.

This week’s installment of the Super Tuesday drew 355 players to the tables, building a $355,000 prize pool shared among the top 53 finishers. A min-cash was good for $2,206.21, and more than $64,000 was scheduled for first place.

Five and a half hours of play passed before WCOOP 2016 finalist Jeremy “EndlessJ” Menard busted in 54th, popping the money bubble. Another two hours of play sorted out all but the final 10 finishers. The final table bubble was looming at 10:32 p.m. ET when two simultaneous knockouts on the 8K/16K/1.6K level set up an eight-handed final table.

On Table 14, Beowulf3182 opened the action under the gun with an all-in bet of 158K, holding 8♣ 8♦, and had the edge when past Sunday Warm-Up champ and 2016 November Niner Kenny “SpaceyFCB” Hallaert called in the big blind with 7♣ 7♦. But the turn of the 5♥ J♦ 4♠ 7♠ K♠ board made a set for SpaceyFCB, winning him the pot and busting Beowulf3182. Meanwhile, DRONCHEK opened the action with a min-raise on Table 25, then re-raised all-in after M-Spot69 made it 80K to go. M-Spot69 called with K♥ K♠, which held up against A♦ J♦ on the 7♥ 6♠ 2♣ 10♠ 3♥ board to eliminate DRONCHEK.

As the shorter of the two stacks when the hands in question began, Beowulf3182 became the 10th-place finisher. DRONCHEK took ninth, and these players sat down to an eight-handed final table:

Seat 1: Francisco “Tomatee” Benitez (215,012 in chips)
Seat 2: Ashthegreat (856,166 in chips)
Seat 3: P0KERPR02.0 (746,245 in chips)
Seat 5: M-Spot69 (1,736,989 in chips)
Seat 6: Tomi “elmerixx” Brouk (2,819,596 in chips)
Seat 7: Guy “JUMBOSMOTOS” Goossens (498,504 in chips)
Seat 8: Machadada RS (484,511 in chips)
Seat 9: Kenny “SpaceyFCB” Hallaert (1,517,977 in chips)

It took more than an hour for the first elimination to come about. Past LAPT Chile High Roller champ and six-time COOP finalist Francisco “Tomatee” Benitez survived two all-in situations early on, doubling first with 2♦ 2♠ against Ashthegreat’s A♣ Q♠ and then with Q♣ Q♠ against P0KERPR02.0’s J♦ J♥ on the very next hand. Then K♦ K♠ held up for Tomatee against SpaceyFCB’s 7♦ 7♠, boosting his stack to a comfortable second-place count of 1.6M chips.

After another half-four of double-ups for the short stacks, elmerixx opened a hand with a small raise to 67K and Ashthegreat called in the big blind, bringing a 5♣ 4♠ 9♣ flop. Ashthegreat checked, then raised all-in to 426K after elmerixx bet 120K. elmerixx called with Q♣ 3♣, which had plenty of outs but trailed Ashthegreat’s pair of nines with 10♥ 9♥. The Q♦ on the turn was one of those outs, and the 6♠ river gave elmerixx the 1M-chip pot, sending Ashthegreat to the rail in eighth.

elmerixx struck again for the second knockout, this time much more quickly than the first. The Finn opened for 87K under the gun with A♣ A♠ and was the only caller after TCOOP 2017 winner Machadada RS re-raised all-in for 592K in the hijack seat. Machadada RS’s K♣ K♥ couldn’t find the two-outer on the 8♣ 3♣ 2♦ 7♥ 5♦ board, and the Brazilian player departed in seventh.

elmerixx took a stab at another knockout three hands later. After opening for 78K on the button and getting a call from Tomatee in the big blind, elmerixx bet 107K when checked to on the 3♠ 9♦ Q♠ flop. Tomatee called there and check-called 332K more on the 10♦ turn before checking the 4♥ river. elmerixx moved all-in, and Tomatee called for 1.3M, showing Q♣ Q♥ for a flopped set of queens. elmerixx had K♦ 6♦ for a busted flush draw, and Tomatee won the 3.8M-chip pot.

That turned the top two spots on the leaderboard upside down, but the rest of the table was still mostly comprised of short stacks. Among them was Guy “JUMBOSMOTOS” Goossens, who called all-in from the big blind for 111K with K♠ Q♣ after elmerixx three-bet with A♦ 6♦ in the big blind over the top of M-Spot69’s button raise. M-Spot69 folded, elmerixx made a pair of aces on the 4♣ 9♣ 10♦ 4♥ A♣ board, and JUMBOSMOTOS’s tournament ended in sixth.

Guy Goossens

Kenny “SpaceyFCB” Hallaert was in a virtual tie for last when he picked up A♥ K♦ in the big blind a few hands later. He called for 17K less than P0KERPR02.0’s 460K all-in bet, getting heads-up with the German player’s 9♦ 9♠. Hallaert made three aces on the 5♣ 2♣ A♦ Q♦ A♣ board, doubling to 925K and leaving P0KERPR02.0 with less than a small blind’s worth of chips. Those went in the middle on the following hand with K♣ 7♣, faced down by M-Spot69 with A♥ 5♣. M-Spot69 made a full house twice over on the 5♦ A♣ 5♥ A♠ 9♦ board, and P0KERPR02.0 was out in fifth.

The action slowed down for a few minutes, but soon SpaceyFCB’s need for more chips ran up against bad timing to force him out. Holding A♠ K♥, he opened under the gun with a min-raise to 80K and then jammed for 1.3M after elmerixx re-raised to 300K in the big blind. elmerixx called with K♦ K♠, the board came J♣ 9♣ 8♦ 9♥ 3♣, and SpaceyFCB bowed out in fourth.

With elmerixx and Tomatee both holding plenty of chips and M-Spot69 at about 20 big blinds, the cards again drove the next elimination. Tomatee opened the action by limping for 100K on the button. M-Spot69 called in the small blind, and then elmerixx re-raised to 375K in the big blind. That chased Tomatee away, but M-Spot69 opted to shove for just over 1M. elmerixx called with A♥ K♦, which had the lead over M-Spot69’s A♦ 10♠ and stayed there as the board came 8♦ Q♠ 8♥ 4♥ 9♠. With that, M-Spot69 left in third.

That left just elmerixx and Tomatee at the table, both guaranteed to place higher than the last time they met at a major PokerStars final table, the 2015 WCOOP High Roller Event. They immediately agreed to look at numbers for a deal. And as soon as the tournament host dropped in with ICM numbers, they agreed to those as well. That left $6,500 on the table for the winner and got the game running again.

Tomatee won a big pot relatively early with K♦ 9♦ on the button, flopping a flush draw and backing into a pair of kings on the river of the 4♠ Q♦ 7♦ 5♠ K♥ board. Getting paid on the river was good for a 4.8M-chip pot and a 2-to-1 chip lead.

elmerixx struck back a few hands later, soft-playing a gutshot straight draw in position with 10♦ 6♠ before turning a pair of tens. He made a final value bet on the river with the board reading 2♦ 8♠ 7♥ 10♠ Q♦ and got paid, taking down the 3.9M-chip pot to reclaim the lead by 20 big blinds.

That took the two players to the 12:55 a.m. ET break, and they came back to a big pot for elmerixx. He opened for 135K on the button with 9♠ 8♦ and continued for 98K after Tomatee called and checked the 4♠ 8♥ A♦ flop. elmerixx called, both players checked the 6♣ turn, and Tomatee led for 357K on the 8♠ river. elmerixx thought for a bit before raising to 1.4M, a bet that Tomatee paid off before mucking when elmerixx showed trip eights for the 3.7M-chip pot.

That gave elmerixx the lead by 90 big blinds. Tomatee was able to make up a little bit of ground before picking up A♠ K♣ on the button and raising to 120K. elmerixx called and checked the 2♠ 5♦ 6♦ flop before raising Tomatee’s 103K-chip bet to 330K. Tomatee called, and then elmerixx check-called another 373K on the K♠ turn to bring the 9♦ on the river. elmerixx check-called one final time for 1.4M, showing down Q♦ 10♦ for a diamond flush. That topped Tomatee’s pair of kings, bringing this week’s Super Tuesday to its close.
