Sunday Million: Rob “robtinnion” Tinnion tops field, collects nearly $214K for win

September 01, 2014

A big turnout for this week’s Sunday Million saw 7,133 players gather to play online poker’s most popular Sunday major. They’d settle things somewhat swiftly this week, with just under 12 hours needed before the U.K.’s Rob “robtinnion” Tinnion collect the last of the chips and a big $213,994.70 first prize with no final table deal having been made.

That big field built a $1,426,600 prize pool, well over the tourney’s $1 million guarantee. It took almost exactly five hours for the field to be carved down to 1,080 players and the money bubble to burst, at which point Diego “Die Ventura” Ventura, nhsjkb, and arinna1 occupied the top spots in the counts.

Three hours after that the field had shrunk to less than 100 players, with FaNjkEEE, Paul “J-Rod Fett” McTaggart, and Rob “robtinnion” Tinnion the new leaders. By then Diego “Die Ventura” Ventura and nhsjkb were still in the mix with below average stacks, while arinna1 had been ousted in 441st for a $470.77 cash.

Two hours later they were down to 18 with krabben and kalidonios on top as the only players with more than 10 million. FaNjkEEE had just been eliminated in 19th ($3,323.97), following former leaders Diego “Die Ventura” Ventura (37th, $2,682), Paul “J-Rod Fett” McTaggart (55th, $2,254.02), and nhsjkb (56th, $2,254.02).

It would take almost until the 11-hour mark of the tournament for the next nine to go. ToM RoX 420 (18th), FoxyLisa (17th), and Phemo (16th) each cashed for $3,994.48. HereFijiFiji (15th), 4QuietSTorm4 (14th), and SuperJez (13th) followed them to the rail, picking up $5,920.39 apiece. And Stormus2012 (12th), pleasepick (11th), and adam978 (10th) earned $7,846.30 for their finishes.

With SSSMBRFC2/C the new chip leader with more than 14.5 million, the final table was underway.

Seat 1: Picasso 2 (United Kingdom) — 10,399,595
Seat 2: Itayauser (Germany) — 7,945,408
Seat 3: SSSMBRFC2/C (Canada) — 14,555,360
Seat 4: SashaWSoP (Russia) — 7,367,545
Seat 5: krabben (Norway) — 1,110,589
Seat 6: fuddebuf (Denmark) — 7,003,603
Seat 7: kalidonios (Greece) — 11,257,320
Seat 8: Rob “robtinnion” Tinnion (United Kingdom) — 7,270,360
Seat 9: teo96 (Cyprus) — 4,420,220

Soon after the final table began the blinds were 150k/300k when teo96 opened with a 2x raise to 600,000 from early position, getting only a single caller in kalidonios from the big blind.

The flop came 10♠3♥K♥. kalidonios checked, teo96 continued for 450,000, kalidonios shoved, and teo96 called with the 2,650,220 left behind.

It was A♥A♣ for teo96 while kalidonios held 9♥8♥ for a flush draw. The turn then brought the 10♥ to complete the flush, leaving teo96 hoping to improve to a full house to survive. The river was the J♣, however, and teo96 was done in ninth.

Less than an orbit later, the blinds had bumped up to 200k/400k when Itayauser min-raised to 800,000 from the cutoff seat, SashaWSoP reraised to 2 million from the small blind, then a short-stacked krabben called all in for 225,883 from the big blind. Itayauser folded, and SashaWSoP showed A♠K♦ while krabben had Q♣2♣.

The board ran out 6♣8♦4♥4♠10♠, meaning SashaWSoP’s hand remained best and krabben was eliminated in eighth.

Play continued, then with the blinds at 250k/500k fuddebuf open-raised all in from under the gun for almost 4.6 million. Picasso 2 called all in from the cutoff seat for 4,398,025, turning over 9♥9♣ and hoping the pair would hold versus fuddebuf’s K♥Q♠.

But the K♣7♥J♠ flop hit fuddebuf’s hand, then the K♠ on the turn improved fuddebuf further to trips. The river was the 3♦, and Picasso 2 was out in seventh.

A short while later a hand arose that saw kalidonios raise 2x to 1.2 million from early position then Itayauser call from the button. SashaWSoP called as well from the big blind, and the trio saw the flop come J♠7♦10♠. SashaWSoP checked, kalidonios bet 3 million, Itayauser called, and SashaWSoP folded.

The turn brought the 8♦. This time kalidonios pushed all in and Itayauser called with the 3,446,978 behind. kalidonios showed J♣3♠ for a pair of jacks while Itayauser turned over K♠Q♠ for a flush draw and an open-ended straight draw. Fifth street then brought the 3♦, giving kalidonis two pair and ending Itayauser’s run in sixth place.

Five hands later it was fuddebuf opening with a min-raise to 1.2 million from UTG, then SashaWSoP calling from the big blind. The flop came 4♥9♥J♣. SashaWSoP checked, fuddebuf bet 1,330,000, SashaWSoP check-raised to 3 million, fuddebuf jammed all in, and SashaWSoP called with the 2,513,428 left.

SashaWSoP: A♦4♠
fuddebuf: A♠9♠

Both had aces and both had paired their kickers, with fuddebuf in the lead. The turn was the 8♣ and river the J♠, and SashaWSoP was sent railward in fifth.

Four minutes later fuddebuf was raising again to 1.2 million from UTG, and it folded to SSSMBRFC2/C who pushed all in for 6,940,066 from the big blind and fuddebuf called.

SSSMBRFC2/C showed 3♠3♣ and fuddebuf A♠J♦, then after the flop came A♦5♥8♥ fuddebuf had a pair of aces and the lead. The A♣ fell on fourth street, giving fuddebuf three of a kind, and following the K♣ river SSSMBRFC2/C was out in fourth.

Gestures toward possible deal talk came fleetingly in the chat box, but play continued onward and the tournament was never paused. Soon the blinds were 400k/800k and fuddebuf was min-raising to 1.6 million from the button. Rob “robtinnion” Tinnion pushed in a reraise to 4 million from the big blind, and fuddebuf called.

The flop came A♠K♠J♣, the three Broadway cards producing action as Tinnion led for 3.2 million, fuddebuf shoved for 15,154,402, and Tinnion called right away. fuddebuf had flopped two pair with K♥J♥, but robtinnion had flopped better with A♦K♣. The turn was the 8♥ and river the 6♥, and fuddebuf was out in third.

That hand gave Rob “robtinnion” Tinnion about a 2.5-to-1 advantage to start heads-up play with 50,835,842 to kalidonios’s 20,494,158. The pair would quickly play eight hands without much change to the stacks, then the final hand suddenly arrived.

It began with a 2.5x button raise to 2 million by Tinnion, followed by a shove all in for 19,294,158 from kalidonios and a call from the chip leader. Both players had picked up aces, but robtinnion’s A♣Q♦ outkicked kalidonios’s A♦8♦. The board rolled out 4♥2♣K♠, then 7♥, then 3♠, and just over an hour after the final table had started it was all over — Tinnion had won.

Congratulations to Rob “robtinnion” Tinnion for topping more than 7,000 players in this week’s Sunday Million to collect close to $214K for the win.
