It’s a New Year and a chance for a clean slate. Past misfortune can be put behind as we look forwards with optimism. It’s time for resolutions. For goals. And in the poker world that usually takes the form of playing more volume, moving up in stakes or winning major tournaments.
One player who probably checked off their poker goals a little early in 2016 is Germany’s sk2ll_m0dR who has taken down the first Super Tuesday of the year. sk2ll_m0dR was a dominant force, holding a massive chip lead for the majority of the final table. sk2ll_m0dR was challenged short-handed, but responded in style to kick off the year with a bang with a top prize of $89,425.40. Happy New Year indeed!
This holiday edition of the Super Tuesday would see a field of 466 players come together to form a prize pool of $466,000 to better the advertised guarantee. Johnny Lodden, Naoya Kihara and Mickey Petersen were part of the field representing Team PokerStars but they fell short of the cash.
After five and a half hours of play, the money was reached with former Super Tuesday winner Bryan “bparis” Paris bubbling the $2,330 min-cash in 55th place.
From there it would take another two and a half hours for the final table to be formed. It would be Benson “BBOY3110” Nikkerson who bubbled the final table when he would three-bet jam his A♦J♦ into Matthew “mjw006” Wakeman’s dominant A♥K♦. Then board bricked out as Nikkerson departed in tenth place to see out final table set as follows:
Final Table Line Up
Seat 1: klauniq (209,121 in chips)
Seat 2: donkno2 (116,532 in chips)
Seat 3: hello_totti (379,266 in chips)
Seat 4: AadrovanRj21 (315,207 in chips)
Seat 5: Tamthemanwho (214,322 in chips)
Seat 6: Alex “bigfox86” Foxen (63,364 in chips)
Seat 7: damourinio (110,401 in chips)
Seat 8: Matthew “mjw006” Wakeman (317,446 in chips)
Seat 9: sk2ll_m0dR (604,341 in chips)
It didn’t take long for the action to erupt on the final table with a double elimination in the very first orbit of play. From the button, former SCOOP winner Alex “bigfox86” Foxen moved all in with damourinio moving all in from the small blind. The action was then with mjw006 in the big blind who made the call with Q♥Q♦ to put both opponents at risk. bigfox86 tabled 10♣10♥ while damourinio was live with his A♣K♣. The board bricked out 9♦8♦3♦2♥8♥ to leave mjw006’s queens to scoop the lot and eliminate two players! As the short stack, bigfox86 took home $7,735.60 for ninth place while damourinio received the pay jump to $10,485 for eighth place.
donkno2 found a double up with pocket sixes against the overcards of hello_totti, before it would be klauniq next to fall. klauniq five-bet jammed holding 10♣10♥ but sk2ll_m0dR had that notched with J♦J♥. The board was spread A♥9♥6♥A♦K♦ leaving the jacks in front to see klauniq out in seventh place for $15,145.
The momentum was with sk2ll_m0dR who kicked up the aggression to climb to a commanding chip lead.
There were few big pots as sk2ll_m0dR was able to win the majority of pots six-handed with a small ball strategy. The other five players were a little cautious to climb the pay jumps while sk2ll_m0dR at one stage skipped out to a 10-1 advantage over the next best.
Tamthemanwho caught a double up with ace-queen against the king-ten of hello_totti, before donkno2 got a little lucky to catch an ace with ace-eight to better mjw006’s pocket tens.
The chip leader would finally lose a pot when hello_totti doubled up with ace-queen against sk2ll_m0dR’s king-eight, before Tamthemanwho found pocket aces to double up through AadrovanRj21’s king-queen.
Every time the shorties would double, sk2ll_m0dR would grind them back down again. hello_totti found pocket aces to double up before a bit of luck finally went against sk2ll_m0dR when donkno2’s ace-deuce rivered a straight to survive against the chip leader’s ace-nine.
However it wouldn’t be enough to get donkno2 back into contention. Just moments later, donkno2 found 9♦9♥ and moved all in. hello_totti only just covered and made the call with A♦Q♦ as the race was on. The board of A♠J♦A♥10♥J♥ was about as bad as it gets for donkno2 as hello_totti made a full house to take it down. donkno2 was left to depart in sixth place for $19,805 in prize money.
mjw006 had slipped to the short stack before he moved all in from the cutoff with 6♠5♠. hello_totti was quick to call in the small blind with A♠10♠ and it looked all but over when the flop landed 7♣A♥10♦ to give hello_totti two pair. The turn was the 8♦ to give mjw006 some life with an open-ended straight draw, but the K♣ river left the former Super Tuesday champ on the rails in fifth place for a $26,096 collect.
Four would quickly become three when Tamthemanwho was sent to the virtual rail. Tamthemanwho moved all in from the cutoff with 3♣3♥ and AadrovanRj21 made the call in the big blind with K♦Q♦. The board of 9♥Q♣J♦6♦4♠ paired up AadrovanRj21 to leave Tamthemanwho out in fourth place for a nice $37,280 score.
sk2ll_m0dR still had a massive chip lead three-handed but following the recent eliminations, both hello_totti and AadrovanRj21 had some chips to do some damage.
And damage was exactly what hello_totti inflicted with back-to-back double ups. First, it was hello_totti’s pocket sixes which survived elimination against sk2ll_m0dR’s ace-seven. That was followed up by a huge clash on a flop of A♣5♥K♥. hello_totti held top pair with ace-jack and that was able to fade the flush and straight draw outs of sk2ll_m0dR who went with Q♥10♥.
AadrovanRj21 was unable to do the same to become the next casualty. AadrovanRj21 three-bet all in with K♠Q♠ but the timing was astray as hello_totti snapped it off with a monstrous K♥K♦. The board offered nothing for AadrovanRj21 as it ran out 4♦7♥4♥9♠10♥. The kings were good for hello_totti as AadrovanRj21 picked up $48,930 for third place.
Heads-up chip counts
Seat 3: hello_totti (1,994,894 in chips)
Seat 9: sk2ll_m0dR (335,106 in chips)
The tables had been turned with hello_totti now holding a commanding chip lead over sk2ll_m0dR who had dominated the majority of the final table.
sk2ll_m0dR was able to chip away to close the deficit in the early heads-up play, before a key hand would see sk2ll_m0dR land a big double up. hello_totti raised preflop on the button, and bet every street on a board of 4♥Q♦3♥10♥8♦. On the river, sk2ll_m0dR pulled out a check-raise all in, and hello_totti made the call with pocket tens for a set but that wasn’t enough as sk2ll_m0dR showed J♥7♥ for a deceptive flush.
That hand swung sk2ll_m0dR back into the chip lead, and that momentum continued all the way to the final hand of the tournament.
In a three-bet pot, the two saw a flop of 3♠4♠9♣ where hello_totti led out with a bet. sk2ll_m0dR responded by moving all in and hello_totti was happy to make the call with J♦J♥ for the overpair which had sk2ll_m0dR in trouble with K♣9♠ for top pair. The turn was the 5♥ but the river brought the K♥ to give sk2ll_m0dR two pair and the victory!
It was a great fight back by hello_totti but the luck just went the other way heads-up. hello_totti takes home $66,405 for a great tournament, but the title and $89,425.40 in prize money goes to Germany with sk2ll_m0dR a deserving champion! Congratulations!
