SCOOP: danxxx1 takes down three tables to win Event #5 shootout

April 05, 2009

The No-Limit Hold’em Shootout event was a hot ticket Saturday. The 1,000 seats available for the $162 medium version of Event #5 of the Spring Championship of Online Poker were filled well in advance of the event’s 2:30 p.m. EST start.

Players who won their first table were guaranteed $577.50 with the 10 surviving contestants after the second round of the shootout guaranteed at least $2,100 for making the final table. The winner would receive $27,375.

After nearly nine hours of play the final table was set. All players would start with stacks of 500,000 as blinds started at 2,500/5,000.

Seat 1 – Bounatirou
Seat 2 – TiltHappens
Seat 3 – annodv
Seat 4 – copi
Seat 5 – danxxx1
Seat 6 – Jaral
Seat 7 – mashek
Seat 8 – KingKobe MVP
Seat 9 – untamed64
Seat 10 – chapz805

Playing 100 big blinds deep, the participants took their time feeling each other out. Finally, a big hand occurred. KingKobeMVP raised the 6,000 big blind to 18,000 from under the gun. Just to his left untamed64 made the call while all other players folded. After a flop of 3♠ Q♣ 3♥ KingKobeMVP check-raised a 18,000 bet by untamed64 to 51,000 and untamed64 called. The turn was the 6♦ and untamed64 called an 82,000 bet by KingKobeMVP. After the 2♠ hit the river KingKobeMVP put untamed64 all-in for his last 153,000 and untamed64 called for his tournament life. KingKobeMVP flashed his pocket rockets of A♠ A♥ while untamed64 exited in tenth place with Q♥ J♥. He earned $2,100 for his efforts.

It took about an hour for the next bustout, and again KingKobeMVP was the man with the big hand:

For his ninth-place finish chapz805 earned $2,850.

TiltHappens was next to go. Playing 8,000/16,000 blinds with a 2,000 ante, Bounatirou raised to 40,000. TiltHappens re-raised to 120,000 and after everyone else folded Bounatirou bet enough to put TiltHappens all-in. TiltHappens made the call. The hands:

Bounatirou Q♦ Q♠
TiltHappens A♠ Q♥

The board came J♣ 4♠ 5♥ 6♥ 9♣ to send TiltHappens to bed $3,750 richer in eighth place.

While he started hot to triple his stack to more than 1.5 million, KingKobeMVP fell hard. First, he lost most of his stack when he got annodv to commit his stack preflop with pocket jacks against his pocket queens, but annodv spiked a jack on the turn to take most of KingKobeMVP’s stack. A few hands later while playing 10,000/20,000 blinds with a 2,500 ante, KingKobeMVP raised to 50,000 from under the gun plus one. Jaral bet enough from the big blind to put King KobeMVP all-in and he made the call with 5♥ 5♣. Jaral showed K♠ Q♣ and we were off to the races. The board ran out 2♦ 10♣ Q♥ 7♥ 7♠ and KingKobeMVP was out in seventh place, collecting $4,725.

Down to 313,000, Bounatirou pushed his stack in from the button only a few minutes later with 10♦ 3♣. Copi made the call from the big blind with A♥ Q♠. The community cards came Q♦ 6♣ J♠ 7♠ A♣ to end Bounatirou’s day in sixth. He earned $6,000.

Mashek had a rough run to exit in fifth. First, danxxx1 doubled through him when his A♠ 2♣ spiked a deuce on the turn against mashek’s A♦ 10♥, then mashek called a bet all-in for his tournament life against Jaral after the other four players folded to their blinds. The hands were A♥ 8♥ for Jaral and A♣ 9♥ for mashek. The board came 8♦ 3♦ 2♠ A♠ 3♥ to give Jaral two pair and send mashek out with $7,425.

Jaral quickly became the next victim, however, in this hand:

After this hand danxxx1 became a big chipleader with more than 3 million chips after having less than 250,000 only minutes before.

He would add to it minutes later. The other players chipped away at danxxx1’s stack, but he would soon get them back and more. After annodv folded his button, copi completed for 30,000 in the small blind and danxxx1 raised it to 120,000 in the big blind. Copi responded by limp-raising it to 390,000 and danxxx1 put him all-in for another 953,000. Copi quickly called with J♠ J♥ and was well ahead of the A♦ 9♣ possessed by danxxx1, but the board cruelly ran out 4♦ K♥ 10♠ 4♥ A♥ to give danxxx1 top pair on the river and a 3.68 million stack. Copi earned $14,175 for his troubles.

Momentum soon shifted. First, annodv doubled through danxxx1 with A-2 versus K-Q. Then with a board of 6♣ 10♣ K♠ 4♥ and 630,000 in the pot, annodv pushed all-in for 1.39 million with A♣ 8♣. Danxxx1 called with K♥ 8♦. The river came J♣ to give annodv the nut flush and a 3.4 million to 1.6 million chip lead.

Danxxx1 used the five-minute break to regroup. Shortly after coming back he doubled through annodv with A♠ K♠ versus the 3♠ 3♥ when the two players got it all-in before the flop, which brought an ace. Then annodv won with A♦ 9♥ against the A♥ 7♣ of danxxx1 to practically square the match.

Danxxx1 then used aggressive play to pull back ahead and finally win the event after 12 hours of play. On the final hand annodv raised to 120,000 on the button and danxxx1 put him all-in for his last 1.33 million. Annodv made the call with A♦ 4♠ and needed help against the A♠ Q♦ of danxxx1. The board ran out A♥ 3♣ J♠ 10♥ K♦ and danxxx1 was the champion.

Final placements and prizes (the top two spots reflect a deal made between danxx1 and annodv) were:

First – danxxx1 ($25,425)
Second – annodv ($21,000)
Third – copi ($14,175)
Fourth – Jarral ($10,575)
Fifth – mashek ($7,425)
Sixth – Bounatirou ($6,000)
Seventh – KingKobeMVP ($4,725)
Eighth – TiltHappens ($3,750)
Ninth – chapz805 ($2,850)
Tenth – untamed64 ($2,100)
