SCOOP 2022 Day 1: Lex and Spraggy into the groove, as 100K entries amass on first day

May 09, 2022inPoker

It’s that time we have all been waiting for: the Spring Championship of Online Poker (SCOOP) 2022 is upon us! Here’s the first of our daily SCOOP bulletins, the one-stop-shop for all you need to know from across the Series.

TODAY’S HEADLINES

  • Nearly 100K entries on opening night
  • Lex and Spraggy into the early groove
  • Six winners, six countries in global series

BEHIND THE HEADLINES

Welcome to the first 100,000! It’s back! The 2022 Spring Championship of Online Poker (SCOOP) is finally upon us, with the opening Sunday featuring 18 tournaments — three each in Events 2 through 7. And in the most predictable news of the year: players have turned out in their droves. There were 97,854 entries into those tournaments, building prize pools of $6,445,925. Although only six tournaments finished — and our Stat Tracker below will only show stats from those events — it’s already clear that guarantees are going to be smashed as this SCOOP starts with a bang.

Great SCOOP start for Lex

Lex steals headlines on opening day: Despite now having to leave his home country to play online, Lex Veldhuis still knows how to put on a show during SCOOP. On the opening night of this year’s festival, the Belgium-based Veldhuis battled through a field of 296 runners to sit among the 13 remaining players in the $2K buy-in SCOOP-04-H Sunday High Roller. There’s the best part of $50K up top, plus tons more in bounties, and the tournament restarts today at 12.30pm ET. You can watch it all live on Veldhuis’s Twitch channel.

Near miss for in-form Spraggy: Benjamin “Spraggy” Spragg enjoyed his best ever outing to a PokerStars live event in Monte Carlo last week, cashing four times and making two final tables. He came back to the UK to play the opening day of SCOOP, and was straight back into the money. Spraggy finished eighth in SCOOP-07-H, a $1,050 buy-in event, banking $3,499, including bounties — but this was a seven-max event, so that’s a bubble of the official final table. The tournament was won by FishOnHeater, from Hungary, who beat Christoph “26071985” Vogelsang heads up. FishOnHeater (no, that’s not Spraggy) won $68,630, including bounties, the biggest first prize handed out on SCOOP’s opening day.

Six winners from six different countries: The first six tournaments to conclude on Sunday night, and therefore in this SCOOP festival as a whole, gave us winners from six different countries. Each of Germany, Austria, Argentina, Romania, UK and Hungary are on the board already, with the likelihood that more than 30 countries will crown winners this time. It underlines the global appeal of SCOOP, where we discover new players from new countries each renewal. There was a near miss for Honduras, for example, when “GOT3As” finished second in SCOOP-06-L, the $3.30 buy-in NLHE.
