SCOOP 2014: Sweet victory for CandyJohnson in Event #13-M ($215 NL Single Draw 2-7)

May 09, 2014

Once an archaic game played only in high-stakes rotations and an annual WSOP event, No-Limit 2-7 Single Draw has experienced a renaissance in the last few years. Anyone eager to try their hand at mixed games is wise to learn it, as are those yearning to climb the tournament leader board. No-limit 2-7 is deceptively simple– a betting round before and after a single draw, the best low wins– but has volumes to teach when it comes to bluffing, misdirection, and formulating hand ranges. Tonight’s master of deception was Norway’s CandyJohnson, who eliminated half the final table en route to winning a SCOOP title.

245 players turned out for a shot at a SCOOP watch in Event #13-M, their $215 buy-ins combining to form a $49,000.00 prize pool. 35 players earned a share of it with first place taking home $10,657.50. Red Spades George Danzer, Marcin Horecki, Naoya “nkeyno” Kihara, Matthias “Mati312” Brandner and ElkY joined the action, but mont of them finished in the money.

Blinds were up to 2,500/5,000 with eight players remaining. When the action folded to lol1k12 in the small blind, he moved in for 52,176 and Gunslinger3 called from the big blind. Lol1k12 drew one card while Gunslinger3 stood pat with 9-8-6-5-4. LoL1k12’s Q-7-5-4-2 couldn’t compete, and his run came to an end on the final table bubble.

Gunslinger3 runs out of ammo

Lotos64 got off the short stack when he doubled through JulioCesar48, his pat 9-8-7-5-3 edging out a pat J-9-8-4-3. JulioCesar48 sunk to 83,700 in chips but doubled through Gunslinger3 on the next deal. All-in before the draw, JulioCesar48 stood pat while Gunslinger3 discarded one. Gunslinger3 turned up Q-9-7-5-4, but it wasn’t enough to beat JulioCesar48’s T-7-6-5-4. Gunslinger3 was left with only 369 in chips and was eliminated in seventh place on the next hand ($1,470.00).

The fall of JulioCesar48

Meanwhile, saliampakos7 had slipped all the way to 12,000 in chips. With the blinds up to 3,000/6,000, saliampakos7 moved all-in and OhRaisyDaisy successfully isolated with an 18,000 three-bet. Both players drew one card. Saliampakos7’s T-8 low was good against OhRaisyDaisy’s A-9 and he doubled to 38,700.

Then, on the next deal, CandyJohnson opened for 12,720 and lotos64 three-bet to 30,000. JulioCesar48 shoved for 134,700 and chased out CandyJohnson, but lotos64 looked him up. Both players stood pat, lotos64’s 8-7-6-4-3 low beating out JulioCesar48’s T-8-6-5-2. For sixth place, JulioCesar48 picked up $1,960.00.

OhRaisyDaisy takes out saliampakos7

A short time later, saliampakos7 got another reprieve, doubling to 74,000 when he made a 9-7 low against lotos64’s T-9. However, he didn’t hang on to those chips for long. Down to 46,000, he moved all-in from UTG and OhRaisyDaisy called from UTG+1. Saliampakos7 drew one card ad OhRaisyDaisy stood pat. Saliampakos7’s J-7-5-4-2 fell to OhRaisyDaisy’s T-9-6-4-3 and he exited in fifth place, good for $2,450.00.

CandyJohnson busts MarkusG91

Four-handed play dragged on into the 4,000/8,000 level, MarkusG91 falling on the short stack with 86,000 in chips. When the action folded around to the small blind, CandyJohnson made it 112,000 to go and MarkusG91called all-in. Both players stood pat and CandyJohnson revealed T-9-8-6-4 low. MarkusG91’s J-8-7-6-2 was no good and he hit the rail in fourth place, collecting $3,185.00.

OhRaisyDaisy bottoms out

As play turned three-handed the chip counts were closely bunched together. Lotos64 led with 427,000, OhRaisyDaisy was right behind with 408,000 and CandyJohnson held 390,000. After a long stretch of little chip movement, CandyJohnson opened for 21,200 and OhRaisyDaisy called from the big blind. Both players drew one card. OhRaisyDaisy led out for 40,000, and CandyJohnson raised to 100,000. OhRaisyDaisy called only to muck at the sight of CandyJohnson’s 9-5-4-3-2. CandyJohnson moved into the chip lead with 541,000 while OhRaisyDaisy fell to 436,000.

Down to 165,000 lotos64 doubled when he made a 9-6 low against OhRaisyDaisy’s T-8. However, he quickly fell back to 111,000 before he doubled again through CandyJohnson, with 8-6-4-3-2 vs. T-8-7-6-3. OhRaisyDaisy slipped to 189,000 and with the blinds up to 6,000/12,000 he opened for a button min-raise. CandyJohnson shoved for 819,500 and OhRaisyDaisy called. Both players drew one card apiece. OhRaisyDaisy ended up with a pair of threes and CandyJohnson took down the pot with A-T-6-4-3. For third place, OhRaisyDaisy collected $5,145.00.

Heads-up chip counts

Seat 3: CandyJohnson (1,026,932 in chips)
Seat 6: lotos64 (198,068 in chips)

With a five to one chip lead, CandyJohnson kept the pots small and whittled lotos64 down to 103,500 before moving in from the button. Lotos64 called all-in and drew one card while CandyJohnson drew two. Lotos64 turned up 8-7-6-5-3 low and doubled to 207,000.

Three hands later lotos64 open-shoved on the button and CandyJohnson called. Both players drew one card and paired up, but CandyJohnson locked up the win with the best worst hand– a pair of fours.
