We’d like to offer a midday report for you high roller fans. But it’s a shortened Day 1 for this €25K High Roller, one of the marquee events of the PokerStars Championship presented by Monte-Carlo Casino®. That means “midday” has already passed, as the first four of seven scheduled one-hour levels have completed.
We’ll give you the skinny, nonetheless, even if it is a little skinnier than your typical skinny.
After one hour today there were 65 entrants, but the field kept growing after that as the march to the table to pick up seat assignments continued apace.
By the end of Level 4 and the second break, the field was up to 116 entries, with 107 players still playing. Pretty much all the usual suspects who’ve been playing here in Monaco over the last week showed up.
Daniel Dvoress, with whom we spoke earlier today, is here hoping to make a fourth high roller table in the series. All of the week’s high roller winners have joined the crowd, too — Bryn Kenney, Adrian Mateos, Imad Derwiche, Philipp Gruissem (joining in Level 5), and Ole Schemion.
Sean Winter arrived to play his first event of the series and further increase the average skill level on display. Indeed, practically every table looks to be full of tournament talent.
Roman Emelyanov, Steffen Sontheimer, and Orpen Kisacikoglu were among the early knockouts, with each swiftly using his single re-entry option. So, too, did Paul Newey get felted early and then re-enter, as did Joao Simao and Rocco Palumbo. Then just now Team PokerStars Pro Vanessa Selbst lost her stack in a hand versus Javier Gomez Zapatero, though she may be back as well.
Let’s not dwell on the negatives, though. Max Silver has cruised out to an early lead, with Josip Simunic, Julian Stuer, and late arriver Erik Seidel also jumping up to fill the top spots of the counts early on.
Back before too long to see who else arrives and how things end up for this short first day of play.
