On August 28, 2019, Veronica Caneda found reason to press send on the following tweet: “hola, alguien me puede confirmar si esto es que gané un platinum pass??? ???” (Translation: “Hello, can someone confirm if this is that I won a platinum pass? ???”.)
Within a few minutes, PokerStarsSpain tweeted back with a picture of a man in a tracksuit dancing behind the words: “OH YES.”
It was true. Thanks to a promotion on the PokerStars Spain Twitch channel during EPT Barcelona, Caneda became one of the first people to secure a visit to Barcelona in August 2020. She won the coveted Platinum Pass given at random to one of the channel’s followers and therefore ensured that she will be playing in a €25,000 buy-in event before she has even really played any live tournaments in her career.
Caneda, a 29-year-old chambermaid from the beachside town of O Grove in western Spain, got into poker by watching it on TV and live streams with her boyfriend, who is more of a regular player. She named her boyfriend as her favourite player (shortly before also name-dropping Patrik Antonius) and now intends to go to a few small tournaments before diving in at the deep end at the PSPC.
Away from poker, she enjoys going to the beach and reading, as well as spending time with her pet. All of that she can also do in Barcelona next year when she’ll take her seat in the most prestigious event of the summer.
“The best is yet to come,” she says.
