Platinum Madness

Dave Shallow plays on PokerStars as “CrabMaki”, but veterans of the UK poker scene will know him as “Dubai”, the name by which he became famous during poker’s boom years. Shallow was a regular at all the biggest games for more than a decade, winning on the UKIPT and the WPT, among others, as well as claiming two WCOOP titles. He was also well known for knowing how to enjoy the profits of his labours. If you wanted to know where the party was, Dubai was your man.

These days, Shallow, who is 37, focuses more on sports betting than poker, predominantly horse racing, and is now a family man with two children. “I don’t play much anymore as second child was born 2016 and first went to school, so hours didn’t work out well,” he said. “Plus everyone started to be young and good.”

He won his Platinum Pass in the Platinum Madness promotion in February, but didn’t immediately realise. He had assumed the ticket he won was only for an online freeroll. The PSPC, with its €22,000 buy-in, will now be a significantly bigger freeroll, and also a family summer holiday. “I’ll probably bring the missus and kids given it’s summer holidays and can’t imagine anyone will want to have them for 6 days,” Shallow said.
