Oscar “MendaLerenda” Serradell wins third Super Tuesday title (11/11/14)

November 12, 2014

It was another big turnout this week for the Super Tuesday, with the field of 587 nearly matching last week’s total to create a total prize pool of $587,000 that well exceeded the $400K guarantee for the $1,050 no-limit hold’em event. It would take a little over 11-and-a-half hours to find a winner, with the U.K.’s Oscar “MendaLerenda” Serradell ultimately prevailing to win his third Super Tuesday title.

Serradell previously won the Super Tuesday back in November 2011 and then again in April 2012. He earned a cool $95,793.91 for his win tonight after making a heads-up deal with kaju85 of Portugal.

kaju85 actually came away with a few hundred bucks more than Serradell thanks to having the chip lead at the time of the deal. But Mendalerenda staged the comeback to take down the win. Here’s the story of how the tournament went and how he ultimately prevailed.

It took about five-and-a-half hours for that big field to be whittled down to 72 players and the money bubble to burst, at which point kaju85, Agentul05, and gifuhorna were leading the counts.

It would take a couple of hours more for that group to play down to the final 18, during which stretch FastCarss moved out in front by building a stack of nearly 360,000. gifuhorna had fallen in 25th by then, cashing for $3,522, but both kaju85 and Agentul05 were still in the mix with above average stacks.

About an hour-and-a-half after that, nine more had been knocked out. kropnicovic (18th), grekos1981 (17th), and GlitchHopper (16th) each took away $4,696 for their finishes. They were followed by bolivianSWAG (15th), LAP1293 (14th), and Martin “Skrigepas” Hansen (13th) who each earned $7,044. Then felter1989 (12th), la_benjjjjjj (11th), and FastCarsss (10th) each hit the rail, taking away $7,044 apiece.

With Agentul05 having amassed a huge lead over the rest of the last nine players, the final table was underway.

Seat 1: Asj “AsjBaaaf” Taylor (New Zealand) — 233,398
Seat 2: kaju85 (Portugal) — 255,732
Seat 3: WRUUUUM (Finland) — 151,123
Seat 4: Jonathan “OMGjonyctt” Concepcion (United Kingdom) — 260,538
Seat 5: Mike “munchenHB” Telker (Cyprus) — 172,691
Seat 6: iulian21 (Bulgaria) — 304,875
Seat 7: I Visor I (Germany) — 205,975
Seat 8: Agentul05 (Romania) — 1,114,623
Seat 9: Oscar “MendaLerenda” Serradell (United Kingdom) — 236,045

Soon after the final table began, the blinds were 4,500/9,000 when kaju85 opened for 18,270 from the button, then WRUUUUM three-bet all in for 153,373 total.

It folded back around to kaju85 who called, turning over J♦J♥ while WRUUUUM had A♣J♣. The board came 2♠10♦5♥K♥3♦, kaju85’s jacks held, and WRUUUUM was out in ninth.

kaju85 continued to add chips as Agentul05 lost a few, and the latter’s big lead was narrowed. Then as play neared the tourney’s 10-hour mark, the blinds were 6,000/12,000 when kaju85 raised to 24,360 from the cutoff, Mike “munchenHB” Telker reraised all in for 128,657 from the small blind, and kaju85 called.

kaju85 had Q♦Q♠ versus Telker’s A♣9♠. The 4♥10♦Q♣ flop improved kaju85 to a set, and by the 2♣ turn Telker was drawing dead, with munchenHB’s tourney run ending in eighth place.

About 25 minutes later the blinds were 7,000/14,000 when Agentul05 raised to 28,000 from under the gun. It folded around and both iulian21 (small blind) and I Visor I (big blind) called. The flop came single-suited — 5♥10♥7♥ — and it checked to Agentul05 who bet 49,500. iulian21 then check-raised all in to 288,946, I Visor I folded, and Agentul05 called.

Agentul05 showed K♣K♦ and had the edge on iulian21’s 6♣6♥ although the latter still had a flush draw. But the turn was the 5♣ and river the 5♠, and iulian21 was ousted in seventh.

Play continued with the blinds moving up again to 9,000/18,000, and after a raise to 36,000 by Asj “AsjBaaaf” Taylor from the button, kaju85 shoved all in for nearly 600,000 from the small blind. It got back to Taylor who called all in with the 298,523 remaining, and Taylor showed A♥Q♠ while kaju85 turned over 10♥9♥.

The flop came 10♠4♦2♦ to pair kaju85 once, then the 9♠ made a second pair for kaju85, making the 6♥ river no matter and sending AsjBaaaf railward in sixth.

Play continued into the tourney’s 12th hour, then with the blinds up to 12,500/25,000, I Visor I raised to 52,500 from early position, kaju85 reraised to 137,500 from the big blind, and I Visor I called. The flop came 5♦K♣8♠. kaju85 bet 137,500, and I Visor I called. Both then checked the 6♠ turn.

The river brought the 9♦ and an all-in shove by kaju85, and I Visor I called with the 408,199 left. kaju85 had 9♣7♥ for a turned straight, better than the 9♥9♠ for a rivered set for I Visor I, and latter was knocked out in fifth.

On the very next hand, a now short-stacked Agentul05 pushed all in for 125,046 from under the gun, and after kaju85 reraised from the small blind, Jonathan “OMGjonyctt” Concepcion folded the big blind. kaju85 showed A♣Q♦ and Agentul05 K♣4♦. The board ran out J♦5♥4♥5♠Q♣, giving kaju85 the better two pair and ending Agentul05’s tourney run in fourth.

Then on the seventh hand of three-handed play, kaju85 — by now the overwhelming chip leader with more than 2.43 million — open-shoved from the button and got callers from both Jonathan “OMGjonyctt” Concepcion who had but 40,727 after posting the small blind and Oscar “MendaLerenda” Serradell who had 410,604 after posting the big blind.

MendaLerenda: 10♥10♠
kaju85: K♦Q♥
OMGjonyctt: 8♦6♥

The board came 3♥J♣4♣8♥4♠, meaning Serradell’s tens were best and Concepcion was out in third.

That hand closed the gap somewhat with kaju85 having a little better than 2-to-1 chip advantage to start heads-up play with 2,001,190 to MendaLerenda’s 933,810. The pair soon paused the tourney to talk about a possible deal, and when numbers were produced they both agreed to those proposed — leaving $8,000 for the winner — and play continued.

Serradell fairly quickly closed the gap to pull even with kaju85, then fell back again before earning a big double-up in a hand that saw MendaLerenda’s A♠Q♥ outdraw kaju85’s 4♣4♦ when an ace came on the board.

Just a few minutes later they’d recently hit the tourney’s 11-and-a-half-hour mark when MendaLerenda made a min-raise to 50,000 from the button and kaju85 called.

The flop came 3♣2♠K♣. kaju85 checked, Serradell bet 43,750, and kaju85 called. Both then checked the 8♠ turn, then after the 10♠ fell on fifth street kaju85 checked again. MendaLerenda bet 25,000, kaju85 check-shoved all in for 713,779, and MendaLerenda called.

kaju85 showed A♠5♥ for just ace-high while MendaLerenda had Q♥10♣ for tens and the pair was good to give Serradell the pot and the victory.

Congratulations to Oscar “MendaLerenda” Serradell for topping a field of 587 to win his third career Super Tuesday title and nearly $96K. And kudos as well to kaju85 for making it to the heads-up deal and winning just a little more as a result.
