Poker in the Ears

Heads-up… or ears up, should we say. The latest episode of “Poker in the Ears” is now in your feed!

Evoking a classic western title, at one point James Hartigan characterizes this week’s show as “The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly” to his co-host Joe Stapleton. That indeed seems a fitting way to summarize the episode here.

The pair start with the “ugly” by addressing the recent meltdown of the Poker Brat himself, Phil Hellmuth, at the ongoing World Series of Poker.

Before winning his record-extending 16th WSOP bracelet a couple of nights ago, Hellmuth made two other WSOP final tables at this year’s series. At one he let loose with one of his typical tirades, albeit perhaps more petulant (and profane) than usual.

Hellmuth’s antics provoked much discussion in the poker community, and James and Joe weighed in as well:

After that comes the “good” — a fun interview with Joseph Walsh, screenwriter and co-producer of the classic poker and gambling film California Split.

We’ve talked to Walsh here at PokerStars blog here before both about his 1974 movie and his recent autobiography, Who Says It’s Over. Be sure to tune in to hear the man himself share some background regarding the making of Split and how he recently wrote a sequel featuring the film’s gambling duo, Bill and Charlie.

Finally comes the “bad,” a discussion of another, somewhat less accomplished gambling film, Money Plane. While that movie fails to earn praise from the pair, it does provide an entertaining topic of discussion. It also works as the subject of this week’s Superfan quiz in which Brian Fahey from Ireland tries to win two Sunday Million tickets.
