Terje Augdal won the €10,000 Heads Up Championships late last night bagging €126,700 beating Marc-Andre Ladouceur in a ten-hour epic. It was the final strenuous hurdle at the end of a tough draw which saw him beat, in order; Timothy Adams, Jussi Niemel, Team PokerStars Pro and WSOP Main Event champ Jonathan Duhamel, EPT9 Barcelona Super High Roller champ Dan Smith and, finally, Ladouceur.
Augdal, a Norwegian national who now lives in London, went two-nil up and looked like he was cruising towards the title before Ladouceur pegged one back in the best of five final. The French Canadian, who finished 13th in the WSOP main event this year for $465,159, was never going to just roll over. He took the fourth to level the scores but Augdal, who plays on PokerStars under the name Terken89, rallied to take the title in the deciding match.
‘I definitely lost momentum in the match. I was card dead for about two full matches but I figured I should just wait it out and sooner or later I should hit some hands. I did,’ said Augdal.
With the title and the €26,700 difference between first and second hanging in the balance a key moment was going to give it to one of them. It went the way of Norway.
The turning point
‘There was a big moment after he’d been winning lots of tiny pots at the beginning of the fifth match. I raised it up pre-flop, he calls and it comes [k] with a flush draw. He leads out and I call. The turn brings a six. He checks, I bet, he calls. The river brings a deuce to make a four straight. He checks and I make a big, big bet. I’d been folding for four hours straight by now. He makes a hero call but my two-pairs were good. After that it all went my way,’ said Augdal.
The champ had to get past some incredibly tough players but it was to Ladouceur that he gave the nod when asked who his toughest opponent was, ‘The last one. Marc was the best player in my opinion.’
Given the quality of the field, that’s no small plaudit.
