EPT8 Madrid: McDonald leads heading into Day 3

March 15, 2012

We’re back for Day 3 of the European Poker Tour Main event in Casino Gran Madrid.

For some this is the morning after the night before with the echo of 80,000 Real Madrid fans still echoing along the A6 motorway. For the others, who didn’t fancy, or couldn’t afford, the €80 ticket, today is all about the stories, of hijinks in town last night and of serious intentions in the tournament room this afternoon. The latter will likely be more believable.

We’re down to 112 players from the original 477 and we’ll keep on playing today until just 24 remain. Mike McDonald leads, helped along last night by aces in the last hand of the day to take him over the 400,000 chips mark, along with nearest rival Frederik Jensen.

Day 3 is usually when a tournament really begins to take shape. Stacks grow larger, built as they are now on firmer ground. The leaders also become more obvious, either growing stronger or being exposed if their chips were won using smoke and mirrors. The others will take their last chance at gaining enough momentum to contest a spot in the last 24.

That’s all to come today, as the sun shines down on us outside. Play begins at 12 noon.

Level 14, blinds 1,200/2,400 with a 300 ante. 112 of 477 players remain. Click here for live coverage.
