We know what you might be thinking. Who are those guys? And maybe you have a point. There are a few players in the line-up today who could hardly be described as household names. There’s at least one name listed as being here today that I’ve never seen before in my life, and can only trust that floor staff would never allow someone to walk in off the street and take a seat behind a stack of chips.
But to dismiss these names would be to discount the type of player who has through 11 seasons made their name on this tour, almost from out of nowhere. Think Mercier, Cody, McDonald.
Their faces might be unknown but their tournament records are not. Each… well most… well some… have results that prove there’s enough talent there for a few surprises, and at least one of them is guaranteed to do just that.
Take a look at their career tournament earnings and you get the idea.
To pick out just a few, we wrote about Kapalas earlier this week as one of crowd of Greek players in Deauville trying to match their countryman Sotorios Koutoupas and win an EPT title. Then there’s Dany Parlafas, one of those players who made a single deposit on PokerStars ten years ago and has never looked back. There should be a name for this type of player, but while there isn’t we’ll just have to say things like “potential” and “winner”.
Massou Cohen may not have big results but he does have experience. The man who dresses like he’s the skipper on a yacht (although we saw him wear Uggs at breakfast at least once), has played the tour for years. He has results from all over France but only one on the EPT. This week he’s doubled that, and home field advantage can work wonders.
Benjamin Buhr on course for his biggest cash
The list also includes a few players who are guaranteed to earn more today (15th place will pay €27,850) than they have in their careers combined. That include Benjamin Buhr, and Joseph Carlino, who if you didn’t already know returns as the chip leader. Funny how things work sometimes.
Who are those guys? We’re about to find out.
