EPT10 Deauville: High Rollers do it quicker

January 31, 2014

At time of writing, nine players remain in the EPT Deauville Main Event, having played for four full days already. The next man out will get €50,530 — the kind of return for less than a week’s work to which few outside top-level sports would turn their nose up.

However, just the other side of the rope from the Main Event, the €10,000 High Roller is at the mid-point of its second day. The prize pool for this record-breaking tournament has been announced and, suffice to say, you can get rich a lot more quickly from playing with the big boys.

The winner of the High Roller tournament will be decided tomorrow, three days after it started. A victory is worth €272,000, representing an absolutely terrific hourly rate.

Marcin Wydrowski is the current chip leader, another of the Polish players suddenly making waves across the poker world. He has been to an EPT High Roller final table before, in Prague in 2012, and has steadily been accumulating cashes throughout the past couple of years.

Dominik Panka’s victory at the PCA gave Polish poker another shot in the arm, and with Wydrowski looking good for a deep run here, we may have to start proclaiming a new poker powerhouse.

Needless to say, it is far from a foregone conclusion that Wydrowski (or Panka, in fact) will even cash. There are still some brilliant players among the 29 left, boasting major tournament wins aplenty between them.

Adrian Mateos Diaz is, yet again, in charge of a big stack. The WSOPE Main Event winner picked up Spanish Player of the Year honours this week and is making steady progress towards a first EPT title for Spain. Sergio Aido, his flatmate and friend, also has plenty in this tournament. It’s probably a coin-flip between those two for the first Spanish EPT champ.
