EPT Monte Carlo: Lerner says: “Tut slut Sverige”

April 30, 2009

I like writing in Swedish. I don’t know what it means, but it has little circles above the letters like this: å and, better, it seems to be littered with “rude” words like “bra” and “slut”, which appeals to my puerile sense of humour.

Joy, then, that there’s good reason actually to get a bit Swedish this morning, with the news that the PokerStars passport winner Derek Lerner has just gone “bust” “bust” and knocked out two Swedes in one hand. Alex Roumeliotis, a Swede, moved all in pre-flop for his final 11,000. Thomas Brolin, a Swede, called. Lerner, from Canada, moved all in for 70,000 and Brolin, a Swede, called all in.

On their backs. Upp på rygg.

Roumeliotis had K-10; Brolin had pocket jacks and Lerner had A-K. The flop was dry, but the turn was a king, giving Lerner the lead, which he held until the end. He also had more chips and so it was hej då to Roumeliotis and Brolin.

Lerner is in fine form. As a PokerStars qualifier, he made the final table of the most recent LAPT event in Argentina, and now he’s pushed his stack up over the 100,000 mark in Monte Carlo. No surprise really: Lerner has previously showed his talent to make a World Series final table last year, and then he was one of the tournament leaderboard champions on PokerStars, which earned him a three-stamp passport to events of his choosing on any of the major poker tours.

This is his first stop on the passport tour, and it’s going just fine. He is up to more than 200,000 now and cruising. Lerner shared his thoughts with the video blog team late last night:
