APPT8 Auckland Day 1C: Raising the bar

November 20, 2014

Records are made to be broken and that’s something that PokerStars are pretty good at. Despite a struggling poker economy Down Under, we’re on track for year on year growth here in Auckland as PokerStars continues to raise the bar in this region. The 2013 event was an ANZPT event and with a NZ$2,200 buy-in we saw a field of 213 entrants. This year, it’s an APPT event which means an increased NZ$2,500 buy-in but that hasn’t stopped fantastic numbers taking to the felt of the SKYCITY Auckland Casino this week.

“Mike King is playing today everyone,” Danny McDonagh announced on the microphone with tongue in cheek before play started. “Since we posted that on Facebook and Twitter, we’ve had a rush of 100 entrants so looks like a huge field!”

“He’s also willing to play anyone heads-up for $5,000 after he busts in the first level of the day!”

With a mild chuckle the players got down to business on Day 1c of the APPT Auckland Main Event.

Mike King was joined in the field at the start of the day by the likes of Bruno Portaro, Jesse McKenzie, Patrick Healy, Koray Turker, Henry Szmelcer, Matty Yates, former Aussie Millions champion David Gorr, WSOP bracelet winner Luke Brabin and ANZ Player of the Year contenders Luke Spano and Sal Fazzino. We expect a few more latecomers as the day progresses.

Another eight levels will be played today which will see play wrap up by about 6:45pm this evening. Stay tuned to the PokerStars Blog throughout the day for stories on and off the felt, while the PokerNews team bring you the live updates.
