ANZPT6 Sydney Day 2: Baseball hits fever pitch

March 22, 2014

With Sydney being such an international city, it’s no surprise that it attracts some of the world’s great events. And tonight Sydney will once again be under the international spotlight at it hosts the official opening game of the Major League Baseball season.

Sydney has gone a little baseball mad. It’s been the talk of the town and the baseball players visiting from the US have been here all week running promotions around the city and building the hype for this weekend’s double header between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Arizona Diamondbacks.

When I arrived in Sydney a few days ago, the first thing I did was talk a walk around Darling Harbour. At one end of the harbour there were giant inflatable baseballs floating in the water where there was a promotion running where you could win a trip to Los Angeles. Just fill out a form and you were in the draw for the top prize, but you also got a chance to whack a few plastic baseballs off a tee into the harbour. There was a baseball diamond roped off in the water and if you could hit a “home run” from three swings you’d score a T-shirt.

I have no idea about baseball, but I like free stuff so I said, “Sure, why not?” as I took the plastic bat and lined up. My first goal was to not accidentally throw the bat into the water. My second goal was to not throw out my back. If I could satisfy the first two goals, then I was aiming for the stands!

Ball #1, I shanked badly. Ball #2, not much better. The crowd giggled. Hmmm, maybe this baseball thing is harder than it looks. It was all or nothing now as I got underneath ball #3 and went whack! The crowed watched in awe as it sailed high and long for the home run! BOOM!

And with that one shot, I’d caught the baseball bug.

There are talks that Australia is on the verge of a baseball boom in this country, and after this weekend is done, that might be very true. The SCG, a traditional home of cricket, has been radically converted into a baseball stadium (check out the video below) and the (rather pricey) tickets have already been sold out.

Even this morning here at the ANZPT event, we had one player come up to us to ask how many levels we were playing today. His problem was that he was already lined up to go to the baseball tonight. So if a decision needs to be made later tonight, would it be poker or baseball?

“Baseball for sure! It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity!” came the reply.

So if his poker chips are left to fend for themselves, there’s only one thing left to do. Run it up!
