'Tis the season ... for online poker tournaments! Sure, PokerStars offers tournaments all day, every day of the year, but it is during the month of May that poker players can revel in the amazement of some of the biggest online tournaments of the year. The Spring Championship of Online Poker (SCOOP) is in full swing, with several tournaments each day that offer low, medium, and high buy-ins for players of every bankroll.
And while players are finding a great deal of excitement with SCOOP, the women of PokerStars can also count on their weekly Women's Sunday tournament. It has become a staple for many women each weekend, as they play the numerous satellites to win their seats into the $55 event reserved exclusively for female online players.
This week, the Women's Sunday drew another solid crowd of 192 players. And as usual, the $7K guarantee was blown right out of the water when the prize pool climbed to $9,600. Let's look at the official numbers:
Total players: 192
Prize pool: $9,600.00
Paid finishers: 36
Action started with many players registered before the start time of the tournament, though a number won their seats during the $11 qualifier and the $5.50 last chance turbo satellite, both of which ended after the official start time. But thanks to late registration, the women were able to ease right into their virtual seats and begin play with their starting stacks.
Two names that stood out from the crowd because of the Team PokerStars Pro logos were Katja Thater and Fatima Moreira de Melo. The latter has played many of the previous Women's Sunday events, but Katja was competing in her first.
Fatima didn't last long for the game, as she got into a battle with fellow player katya77780 early in the tournament. On a board of Kd-Ad-Qd-9c, Fatima moved all-in with pocket threes, but her opponent had K-Q. The river was a blank, and Fatima de Melo was eliminated by katya77780, who picked up the $50 pro player bounty.
A short time later, Katja took her chance preflop with Ad-Kh against the Qh-Qc of lena-noga. But the board of 4-3-Q-2-J only helped lena-noga, who won the $50 bounty for eliminating Katja Thater (pictured below) from the tournament.
Play continued on for many of the players, though the field thinned dramatically during the second hour, leaving only five tables of players going into the next hour. Ten minutes later, the money bubble was at hand, but the elimination of Ossiatti in 37th place after several minutes, the rest of the players were guaranteed a minimum of $72.00.
Just before the three-hour mark of the tournament, the final table approached. Meloni77, one of the winners of a seat through today's $11 qualifier, exited in 12th place with $153.60, as LaliTournier followed in 11th. Then talonchick doubled through rudiger1958, leaving the latter short-stacked. Rudiger1958 then moved all-in on the next hand with T♠5♠, and talonchick called with Q♣T♣. The board changed nothing when it came 7♠4♣J♥K♦7♦, and rudiger1958 departed in tenth place with $153.60.
Sarahbangs starts with strong chip lead
In Level 17, with blinds at 1,500/3,000 and a 300 ante, the final table was set. Players' starting chip counts were listed as follows:
Seat 1: Lya0 (59,138 in chips)
Seat 2: talonchick (71,728 in chips)
Seat 3: sportsgei137 (48,246 in chips)
Seat 4: sarahbangs (140,443 in chips)
Seat 5: cep27 (44,289 in chips)
Seat 6: o0ONoraO0o (23,780 in chips)
Seat 7: csimbirozi (83,766 in chips)
Seat 8: TaKjANeWiM (78,704 in chips)
Seat 9: joRditeK (25,906 in chips)
It was evident from the start that this was going to be a final table of big pots and aggressive moves. Some of the bigger pots saw both cep27 and o0ONoraO0o double through sportsgei137, and joRditeK did the same through TaKjANeWiM.
Csimbirozi took a shot at a double-up opportunity with K♦J♦, but Lya0 woke up to A♠K♣ in the small blind and made the call. The board of 3♦4♦T♠5♥9♣ allowed the ace-high to stand, and cximbirozi was the first to exit the final table, taking with her $182.40 for the ninth place finish.
Sportsgei137 regained chips by doubling through cep27, and it wasn't long before cep27 decided to try to get some back. Cep27 raised all-in from early position with A♦5♥, but talonchick called from the small blind with J♣J♦. The flop of 9♦A♥Q♣ put cep27 in the lead with the aces, but the J♥ on the turn gave talonchick the set of jacks. The K♠ on the river ended the hand, leaving cep27 with $240.00 for the eighth place finish.
Oooh, o0ONoraO0o takes over
Meanwhile, o0ONoraO0o doubled through TaKjANeWiM to jump into the chip lead.
A few hands later, when Lya0 raised all-in, o0ONoraO0o was there with the reraise to isolate, which worked. Lya0's tournament life was on the line with Q♣J♦, but o0ONoraO0o had that covered with K♦Q♥. The board changed nothing when it produced 9♣9♦6♠4♥8♣, and Lya0, who won a seat in today's $11 qualifier, exited in seventh place with $336.00.
Talonchick doubled through sportsgei137 to jump into the top spot, but it wasn't going to be hers for long.
A big hand took shape when sportsgei137 moved all-in from early position with A♠9♥. TaKjANeWiM reraised all-in with A♣Q♦, and joRditeK called all-in from the small blind with A♦K♥. TaKjANeWiM had both players covered, and when the board came 2♥T♦J♥8♣9♣, that made her a straight to win all of the chips. JoRditeK was out in sixth place with $432.00, and sportsgei137 followed in fifth with $556.80.
More double-ups followed as sarahbangs doubled through talonchick, and the latter doubled through TaKjANeWiM ... twice! That put talonchick back in the lead by a wide margin. Sarahbangs doubled through o0ONoraO0o, who doubled back through sarahbangs and then through TaKjANeWiM, and TaKjANeWiM did it through talonchick, which can be seen here:
Are you keeping up? We wish we had a chart.
In a battle of the blinds, o0ONoraO0o moved all-in with A♠T♠ from the small blind, and TaKjANeWiM called from the big with K♦9♥. The board immediately hit TaKjANeWiM with the 9♣2♥6♣ flop, and though the J♣ turn was innocent, the K♥ made two pair. That left o0ONoraO0o out in fourth place with $816.00.
A few hands later, sarahbangs took her all-in shot with Q♣7♣, but TaKjANeWiM raised to isolate with A♦K♥. The flop of 4♣Q♥J♥ gave sarahbangs the upper hand with queens, but the 5♥ and 8♥ gave TaKjANeWiM the runner-runner flush. Sarahbangs was gone in third place with $1,084.80.
From two to one in one hand
The final two players started with these chip counts:
Seat 2: talonchick (205,953 in chips)
Seat 8: TaKjANeWiM (370,047 in chips)
A series of raises in the first hand of heads-up led to TaKjANeWiM challenging with an all-in. Talonchick called for her last chips holding A♥J♣, and TaKjANeWiM showed 7♥7♦. The race was on, but the board was an uneventful display of 2♣4♣5♥9♠8♣. Talonchick, who made her third Women's Sunday final table appearance today in less than two months, finished the best of her other attempts, though a win was not in the cards this week. She took home $1,440.00 for the second place finish.
TaKjANeWiM of the Czech Republic grabbed this Women's Sunday title and the $1,963.20 first place prize. Congrats!
