Big win at Snowfest all in a day's work for 18-year old Veronika Pavlikova

Maybe you haven't heard about this yet, because the poker world seems to still be in a bit of shock about last Sunday's Main Event win at the PokerStars.fr France Poker Series. The Snowfest series, as it's called, held at Evian in the French Alps, is eagerly awaited each year by many of the poker world's biggest pros. Some of the pros this year included Guillaume Darcourt--a WPT champion and odds-on favorite, as well as Team PokerStars Pro Matthias de Muelder. Other feared opponents included Elky Grospellier, Eugene Katchalov and Thibaud Guenegou. But one player in particular seemed totally unperturbed by the pros and unyielding in her approach. A teenager by the name of Veronika Pavlikova from the Czech Republic managed to plow through the field of 296 opponents with an unshakable calm that was described in some reports as "fearless," "unstoppable," and "relentless."

When Pavlikova was eventually crowned the winner and walked off with the title and the €70,000 grand prize it left many people wondering. How did she, a young unknown female barely old enough to enter a casino, beat a field of 296 players, many of them well-known pros? Was she unknown only in the live arena but a shark in the online sphere? And last but not least--we know you're wondering, so we asked it--"Is she the next Annette Obrestad?"

We have the answers to those questions and more in this interview with the young poker champion as she reflects on her recent win for PokerStars Women.

PSW: Congratulations on your big win at Snowfest, Veronika! Was this your first major win?

VP: Yes, it was my first big live tournament result, but I have plenty of good scores in online tournaments as well.

PSW: You must have been very excited when you won. Can you tell us a little about it?

VP: I was quite happy that I had achieved a good result in live poker (after playing about 20 live tournaments), but in many ways it was just like another online hit. I do hope that my success at Snowfest will be the start of some good results in live poker, however.

PSW: Do you play on PokerStars quite a bit then?

VP: Yes, I've played on PokerStars since May 2011 as xbet_kiddi, although I've been interested in poker for three years or so.

PSW: What kinds of tournaments do you play?

VP: I play MTTs with large fields.

PSW: How did you get into poker? Did you start online?

VP: My ex-boyfriend was playing online poker all the time, so I became interested. When I turned 18, I began to play online.

PSW: Do you have female friends who play? Do you discuss poker with them?

VP: No, I don't have any female friends in poker. For me it's better to talk about poker strategy with men. I have many high stakes poker friends with whom I discuss strategy and different approaches to various poker situations. Maybe I just haven't met many female poker players.

PSW: How did you decide to go to Snowfest?

VP: My friend posted info about this tournament on Facebook just a few days before the start of the Main Event. I like events that happen without planning, so I decided to go.

PSW: What's next for you on the poker circuit? Do you have another live tournament planned?

VP: I will play the PokerStars.co.uk UK and Ireland (UKIPT) Nottingham tournament in two weeks and maybe even UKIPT Dublin a month after that. I will definitely attend the PokerStars.fr French Poker Series (FPS) Amneville and some Czech tournaments as well. I need to keep grinding online too, but it's hard to find time for that when you are traveling a lot and playing live.

PSW: Are you in school now, as well?

VP: I have paused my studies because of poker. There is more value for me to play poker full-time right now. I will see in the future, but I definitely want to finish my studies one day.

PSW: Turning now to poker strategy, many people have commented on your aggressive approach in the tournament and compared you to another young female poker champion, Annette Obrestad. What do you think of these comments and comparisons?

VP: I love to play extremely aggressive poker, keeping opponents in constant pressure. I didn't always play so aggressively though. My ex-boyfriend taught me this style last year.

I don't think you can compare me to Annette; she is by far better than me. But obviously I would like to achieve some similar results. She has always been my number one female poker idol.

PSW: You beat many well-known pros including final table finishers Guillaume Darcourt, the French favorite and WPT champion who came in fourth, and Team PokerStars Pro Matthias de Muelder, who finished ninth. Do you remember any key hands against them?

VP: I remember playing with Darcourt very well. We played against each other really often. I was 3-betting him a lot and he didn't take it with ease. The one key hand was when we were down to 20 players. I 3-bet him for the fourth time and he 4-bet shoved his stack with QJ off-suit into my pocket Jacks. Luckily he didn't find a queen on the board. He survived until the next day when I finally eliminated him at the final table where I played very aggressively, especially against him.

PSW: One final question. Do you have any special plans for the €70,000 you won at Snowfest?

VP: No, I don't have any special plans. It boosted my bankroll to play even higher tournaments. I will just treat myself with more traveling around the world. That keeps me motivated.

The first season of the PokerStars France Poker Series has been a great success, and this grand final in Paris was always going to be top of the bill. So it proved, with 567 players showing up for the €2,000 buy-in tournament, generating a prize pool of nearly a million euros.

After the four days were over, it was the German Marvin Rettenmaier who picked up the trophy and €244,036 first prize. Heads-up had lasted just 15 minutes when this happened: Rettenmaier and Basil Yaïche saw a [kc][10c][7c] flop and all the money went in. [10d][7s] and two pair for Rettenmaier and a straight draw with [8h][9d] for Yaiche.

The [ks] turn and [4h] river won it for the German, leaving Yaïche to collect €153,000 for second place.

Keep an eye on the France Poker Series website for details of future events.

APPT Cebu and NAPT Los Angeles were already under way, then IPT Malta started - and now FPS Lyon has begun as well. It's a quartet of live PokerStars events (we're not just about online poker, you know).

Lyon saw a field of 324 gather for Day 1 at Casino Le Lyon Vert in eastern France, with 150 of those having qualified online with PokerStars. They generated a €342,144 prize pool, of which €88,444 will go to first. 48 players will be paid.

Yesterday saw Anthony Chaneto from France finish as Day 1 chip leader with 423,500, followed by Rupert Elder with 357,500. The average stack is 114,000.

A total of 71 players will sit down for today's Day 2. You can follow the action on our sister French blog, and Google Translate is available for non-French speakers.

The Italian Poker Tour in San Remo was also in full swing, and the two-day France Poker Series event in Saint Amand ended late last night/early this morning with David Jaoui grabbing the title and €63,000.

Jaoui beat a field of 223 players that generated a very credible €233,488 prize pool. His heads-up opponent was David Herbez from France who took second for €41,138. The final action saw Jaoui shove all-in on the river with [7d][3h]. Herbez called with [7h][Td]. The board was [7s][3d][Kc][2c][4h] giving Jaoui two pair.

Vanessa Hellebuyck leads PokerStars FPS Amand

The first event in Beaulieu-sur-Mer saw 149 runners chasing a €40,123 first prize. Then last month the tournament in Divonne saw 399 runners battle it out for a first prize of €108,894. Now the third stop in Saint Amand has attracted another healthy field of 223 players, with 84 of those having secured their seats through qualification on PokerStars for much less than the €1,200 entry fee.
.
All that means the field at the Casino Partouche is fighting for a slice of a €233 488 prize pool, of which €63,000 will go to the winner. A total of 32 players will be paid.

Yesterday saw Vanessa Hellebuyck from France finish as Day 1 chip leader with 245,500 chips, followed by Franck Cartigny with 242,100. The average stack is 96,100. Among those through to Day 2 today are Alain Roy and Philippe Narboni.

But that's the beauty of the PokerStars France Poker Series; it doesn't hang about.

It meant one player, Serge Didisheim, turned up for Day 1 on Saturday and by late last night (well, 5.30am to be precise) he had €108,894 in his back pocket. Not bad for a weekend's work. He beat a field of 399 players at Divonne-les-Bains, a turnout that generated a healthy €421,344 prize pool.

Didisheim's heads-up opponent was Yann Pelletier from France who took second place for €69,500. The final hand saw Didisheim shove all-in with [Ah][Kd], called by Yann [5c][5h]. The board ran out with [Ac][Kh][Qs][7d][8h] giving Serge two pair.

Serge Didisheim

FPS Divonne-les-Bains, the second stop on the France Poker Series debut season, was regarded as a great success, and players are now looking forward to the next stop in Saint-Amand on October 16/17.

How much live poker can you handle? The LAPT Grand Final started in Argentina on Thursday, as did the Nova Gorica stop of the Italian Poker Tour. Completing the hat-trick run yesterday was the second leg of the PokerStars France Poker Series in Divonne-les-Bains.

A bumper field of 399 players from around the world made their way to eastern France for Day 1, with 201 of those qualifying online with PokerStars. The field at the Casino Partouche means the event is looking at a tidy €421,344 prize pool, of which €108,894 will wing its way into the wallet of the champion. In total, 48 players will be paid.

Yesterday saw Aldo Lisi from Italy finish as Day 1 chip leader with 347 000 chips, followed by Mickaël Furlan with 309 000. The average stack is 113 350.

Some 87 players will return for today's final day, rushing first towards the money, then a final table - and eventually a champion.

Follow the action as it happens over on the French version of the PokerStars Blog.

The second leg of the tour's debut season begins in the eastern town of Divonne tomorrow (Saturday) - and will be done and dusted by Sunday night!

The €1,200 buy-in, two-day event at the Casino Partouche begins at 2pm local time and is expected to attract more than 300 players. Of that lot, 187 will be PokerStars qualifiers. Also playing is Team PokerStars Pro Vanessa Rousso and Julien Brecard.

The tour's first event back in May in Beaulieu-sur-Mer was a great success, with Team PokerStars Pro Jose 'Nacho' Barbero taking top spot for more than €40,000. He won't be back for Divonne, though - he's currently battling it out at LAPT Argentina.
