It's a new year, and like always the new year inspires thoughts of doing things better, improving oneself, loving more, being friendlier and more helpful to others, and changing the world for the better. So I've been thinking a lot about what I want to do in 2013 to make things better for others as well as to help myself, too.
Recently I hired a personal trainer to try to help me stay fit, kind of following the example of Eugene Katchalov and Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier. I used to work out a lot, but was inconsistent with it, especially when traveling to poker tournaments came around to interrupt the flow. So with the trainer, I'm obliged to be more consistent with working out and also sticking to a healthy diet, which should help a lot with stamina at the tables.
So that's my new year's resolution #1 -- don't ditch the trainer! Because really he helps me stay positive. There's something true about that saying "a healthy mind in a healthy body."
Resolution #2 concerns studying the game more. I plan to put in more hours this year reflecting on my game and talking things through with my brother Matty and others. I'm watching more instructional videos and I also have started coaching people, all of which helps me stay more focused and aware when playing. We are, after all, professional poker players, and so our lives can't be one big vacation. Work always has to be done!
My resolution #3 is to love more. At the beginning of January my girlfriend and I moved into a new place in Antwerp. She's really amazing and helpful to me, giving me stability and support so I can be a better poker player and try to achieve more results. So I'm glad we'll be able to spend more time together going forward.
It's hard sometimes when on the road to give enough attention to the ones you love. So I'm going to try harder when I do have free time to spend those hours with the people who mean the most to me, including my friends, family, and my girlfriend.
Finally, my resolution #4 for the new year has to do with finding more ways to help others. I'm in a fortunate position with my life and career, and there are others who have had fewer opportunities or bad luck in life. This past Christmas my girlfriend set up a program to have the neighborhood cook meals for the homeless in the area, and I'd like to continue in 2013 to find more ways to do volunteer work and similar activities to help others.
So that's my plan for the coming year. Good luck to you achieving your goals for 2013, too!
