The PokerStars Sunday Warm-Up today attracted another strong field with 3,512 players handing over the $215 buy-in to form a prize pool of $702,400. The top 540 players would finish in the money with a min-cash worth $295.
Unfortunately for recently-crowned ANZPT Melbourne champion Paul "KingPaulie" Hockin, he would experience a rare taste of pain after falling in 543rd place, and just a few short places from money, while German sk2ll_m0dR would end up as the bubble in 541st place.
Some others who fell before the money included Team PokerStars Pros Max Lykov, Lex Veldhuis, Martin Hrubý, Stavros Kalfas, Johnny Lodden, Richard Toth, Jan Heitmann, Vicky Coren, Caio Pessagno, Pius Heinz, Matthias de Meulder, Nacho Barbero, George Lind, Ana Marquez, Pierre Neuville, Anders Berg, Alex Kravchenko and Andre Akkari.
In fact, only two members of the red spade were able to find themselves into the money.
2011 WSOP Main Event runner-up Martin Staszko was able to cash in this event for the second week running, but fell in 188th place for $561.92, while the last longer was won by Denmark's Mickey "mement_mori" Petersen.
Petersen was able to navigate his way to the final two tables but was unable to get much going at that point, blinding down to around ten big blinds at the 50k/100k level. As the blinds came around, the price had jumped to 65k/130k, which meant Petersen had no hesitation in calling with K♣9♠ from the big blind when Elmagico19A1 shoved the small blind with 3♠5♠. Petersen was hoping for a double up, but the T♣5♦2♦8♥8♦ board paired his opponent to see Petersen pocket $3,160.80 for 14th place.
As play approached the final table, some of the players were starting to get a touch nervous.
wodka88 said, "if i bubble this, i break my computer lol"
Jengleleg said, "me too"
wodka88 said, "nah ur kinda safe"
Those words would almost come back to haunt Jengleleg just moments later when a massive pot erupted with si marco:
With over eight million chips in the middle, Jengleleg got very lucky with an ace on the river to crack the queens to eliminate si marco on the final table bubble in 10th place.
wodka88 said, "i'm happy for your computer jegg =)"
Jengleleg said, "lol"
Final table line up
Seat 1: allintrev23 (4,705,398 in chips)
Seat 2: MegaDes777 (1,343,379 in chips)
Seat 3: marlin5555 (3,316,233 in chips)
Seat 4: SheikhMar (1,951,720 in chips)
Seat 5: Jengleleg (8,242,285 in chips)
Seat 6: wodka88 (2,679,947 in chips)
Seat 7: moumaife84 (3,974,453 in chips)
Seat 8: XuTpbIu_Tun (2,235,852 in chips)
Seat 9: Elmagico19A1 (6,670,733 in chips)
The final table blinds kicked off at 80k/160k with a 16k ante which left a few players under some pressure.
MegaDes777 was able to land an early double up, with pocket sixes making a flush to cripple SheikhMar's ace-queen. It left SheikhMar with just over 2.5 big blinds which were all in next hand with A♦4♣. wodka88 was priced into call from the big blind with 8♥2♠ and again SheikhMar was flushed as the board ran out 4♥7♥8♣A♥Q♥. wodka88 held the only heart as SheikhMar was consigned to 9th place and $5,619.20 in prize money.
Elmagico19A1 landed a double up with a rivered straight against Jengleleg before Elmagico19A1 copped a brutal bad beat in the following hand:
Elmagico19A1 was in great shape to eliminate XuTpbIu_Tun when the chips went in on the flop but XuTpbIu_Tun pulled a remarkable running straight to stay alive.
Elmagico19A1 would get some chips back a short time later with the elimination of marlin5555. The short-stacked marlin5555 moved all in for seven big blinds with A♥8♠ but Elmagico19A1's A♠K♠ was too strong on the board of 9♠T♥9♥7♠5♦. marlin5555 picked up $8,780 for 8th place.
Perhaps playing the rush, and making the most of the chip lead, Elmagico19A1 was again the destroyer when MegaDes777 three-bet shoved all in. Elmagico19A1 had opened with a raise, and decided to gamble and make the call with 5♠6♣. MegaDes777 showed A♥9♥ but the board of 4♥6♠5♣9♣K♣ smacked Elmagico19A1 with two pair to send MegaDes777 to the cashier in 7th place for $15,804 in prize money.
At this point Elmagico19A1 stretched out to a massive lead with more than three times his nearest rival. His dominance extended to winning seven pots in a row, including the elimination of Jengleleg. Elmagico19A1 raised under the gun, and then called it off with A♦3♦ only to be dominated by Jengleleg's A♠J♦. No worries for Elmagico19A1 who continued the epic surge with a board of 5♥8♠5♦3♥T♥. A fine tournament for Jengleleg ended in 6th place for $22,828.
Something had to change the momentum and it was allintrev23's pocket aces that started things off with a nice double up through Elmagico19A1's queen-ten.
moumaife84 then got in on the act as it was XuTpbIu_Tun who was next to go. Elmagico19A1 opened with a raise, moumaife84 moved all in before XuTpbIu_Tun called all in next to speak. Elmagico19A1 decided to let it go as moumaife84's Q♥Q♣ held against XuTpbIu_Tun's A♠K♠. An ace on the flop was a tease but the 6♠6♥A♦Q♦K♦ board brought a third lady on the turn to spell the end for XuTpbIu_Tun in 5th place for $29,852.
The biggest pot of the tournament would then see moumaife84 land a fatal blow with 9♠9♦ against wodka88's K♦J♥ after wodka88's four-bet jam couldn't find a fold from his opponent. The board fell 5♣6♦A♠8♠A♥ to see wodka88 bowled over in 4th place for $40,388.
moumaife84 moved into the chip lead, but it was only temporary as Elmagico19A1 quickly jumped back on top with pocket kings collecting a healthy pot against moumaife84's turned top pair.
Elmagico19A1 continued to push the action, but it backfired when Elmagico19A1 was a little over-eager in three-bet shoving T♥5♥ as allintrev23 made the call with A♥8♥. The board bricked out to see things even up once more.
The pots were kept small as the three players were treading carefully until moumaife84 and allintrev23 collided preflop. allintrev23 jammed the small blind with A♣7♣ with moumaife84 calling for less than ten big blinds with a monstrous K♠K♣. The board fell 4♥T♣8♣2♦9♦ to bring a double up, but moumaife84 wasn't done with yet.
The very next hand, Elmagico19A1 three-bet jammed over the open-raise from moumaife84:
A jack on the flop was followed by a king on the turn to see Elmagico19A1 sent crashing to the rail in 3rd place after a dominant performance on the final table, earning $57,948 in prize money.
Heads-up chip counts
Seat 1: allintrev23 (15,300,186 in chips)
Seat 7: moumaife84 (19,819,814 in chips)
The heads-up pots were mostly small, with a couple of sizeable preflop wars going the way of the aggressive moumaife84 to extend the advantage. However allintrev23 chipped away to reduce the lead before the following hand unfolded. moumaife84 five-bet jammed A♦7♦ and allintrev23 called with 5♣5♠. The board fell K♠K♣Q♣A♣9♣ to see moumaife84 catch an ace but allintrev23 rivered a club flush to grab the ascendency.
moumaife84 was left with under three big blinds, and two hands later, it was all over when moumaife84's K♦4♠ failed to hold against allintrev23's 3♣6♥ when the board was spread J♠Q♣3♥9♣J♦. A great tournament for moumaife84 netted $82,180.80 for 2nd place as the luck of the Irish was with allintrev23 who collects the Sunday Warm-Up title and $110,277.97. Guinness all around!
