With all the drama surrounding the Brenes family playing today, it's easy to forget that there is another poker-playing family in the field today-- Max Stern and his wife Maria. Max and Maria both have WSOP bracelets; he has three and she has one, famously earned in a seven-card stud event where she came back from having literally, one chip and a chair to win the whole shebang. Max and Maria are the only married couple to both win WSOP bracelets.
Maria dreams of pocket kings
Max unfortunately met his tournament end just a bit ago, making his last stand with 8s-9s and failing to improve against his opponent's pocket queens. Maria, however, now sits well above average as play draws to a close for the day. After losing some ground when her opponent made quad queens against her pocket kings, Maria picked up the cowboys again a short time later and got her money in before the flop. Things looked sour, as her opponent revealed A-A in the hole, but Stern spiked a king on the river to hit a set and double up. She's now sitting on 43,000 in chips and is poised to make a run at another LAPT final table.
