While the WSOP clamors on in Las Vegas and the thousands of players there hunker down to outlast the huge fields, the frigid air conditioning, and the long lines for food, water, and bathrooms, I sit here perusing videos from the PokerStars Women channel on PokerStars TV. Not to say I don't sometimes envy my poker-playing friends who are playing the iconic venue, but here in my home office, with all the comforts of a readily accessible kitchen (maybe too accessible) and the other comforts of home, I can say that, at the moment, I'm not jealous.
I'm not jealous because my friends are alternately sweating out their tournament lives and chattering their teeth to chalky nubs in the arctic Vegas poker rooms while I'm improving my game and taking a vacation from stress. At the same time, I'm learning some great strategy tips and Team PokerStars trivia.
Did you know, for instance, that Liv Boeree learned to play poker for a TV game show a few years ago and, until that time, she had never played? What about the fact that she was tutored for the show by a trio of some of the most recognizable names in the game? (Hint: One of them can be a brat about poker.) Watch for more on this and some hands where she's up against said brat in the 2010 LAPT Los Angeles Bounty Shootout. Does the legendary Poker Brat keep his cool? Check out the video to find out.
Or maybe you've always wanted to know what it's like to be a Team Online player. Adrienne Rowsome, the Canadian powerhouse Omaha player who goes by Talonchick online, tells what it's like to work full time as an occupational therapist while supplementing her income by playing poker part time. And by supplementing, we're not talking a dinner on the town once in awhile. Her part-time endeavor has bankrolled a new car and lots of the extras in life. Check out the video here for more on how Adrienne keeps it real while living a life much like the rest of us, at least for part of the time.
And as promised, there are lots of options for improving your poker tournament strategy as well. Here's Liv Boeree showing us how you go about winning an EPT Grand Final title, followed by Vanessa Selbst tearing it up at Mohegan Sun.
If you want to really settle in for some quality TV time, there is much more to see. How about Vicky Coren talking about how she manages to balance her life as a Team PokerStars Pro, a TV personality, and award-winning journalist? Or maybe you're dreaming about qualifying for next year's EPT Monte Carlo, and you're wondering what to plan for. Here are some of the players from last year's tournament to give you a heads-up.
Enjoy your channel surfing and the comforts of home while our WSOP compatriots sweat it out in Las Vegas. But do remember to send those congratulatory tweets and texts to friends who make it through. They've had to slog through a lot to get there.
