The ANZPT wound its way to the wild, wild West today as Day 1a of the ANZPT Perth Main Event kicked off inside the air-conditioned comfort of the Crown Perth Casino. It was a 7pm start time for the opening flight which suited players, tournament staff and media alike, as a full day of fun activities kept interstate visitors well-entertained to further enhance the ANZPT's reputation of providing destinations that offer more than just a game of poker.
With the cards in the air, a total of 67 players took to the felt for Day 1a with even more expected tomorrow to most likely produce a prize pool in excess of last year's numbers. It was a highly-talented field with the likes of Ricky Kroesen, Kristian Lunardi, Brad Bower, Liam O'Rourke, Tom Grigg, Dan Neilson, ANZPT Queenstown champ Dave Allan, WSOPE bracelet winner Andrew Hinrichsen, Australian Poker Hall of Famer Gary Benson and previous EPT San Remo winner Rupert Elder.
The field was also full of local hopes with Vesko Zmukic, Dale Marsland, Lawrie Gibson, Joe Darcy, Ted Nguyen, Sal Fazzino and 2012 Aussie Millions final tablist Patrick Healy leading the charge.
A short day saw just six levels of play for players make progress, but that was enough for our field to drop to 38 players. Andrew Jeffreys shipped some justice to build a stack that was among the chip leaders for most of the day, while Ricky Kroesen and Dale Marsland were also impressive. However the end-of-day chip lead would ultimately belong to Peter Woodworth who would bag up 84,025 chips.
Tune into the live updates section a little later this evening for a full list of chips counts from the surviving players.
We'll be back tomorrow from 12:30pm (GMT+8) for live coverage of all the excitement of the ANZPT Perth Main Event from Crown Perth. Thanks for following along and we look forward to your company again tomorrow.
