PokerStars 2006 Year in Review

The year 2006 was yet another banner year for PokerStars and its valued players. It was a year of change, improvement, and success. Now licensed in the Isle of Man, PokerStars made every effort to give its players the best experience in online poker. From translating its web site to a number of different European languages to offering its 38 millionth tournament, PokerStars grew to be the biggest online poker site and was named the best poker site by the readers of Bluff magazine. PokerStars continues to serve every level of player with the best of its ability, from the play money players to the people frequenting the big $100-$200 NL games hosted by Barry Greenstein.

Here's a look back at 2006 and all the fun at PokerStars.

By September, Supernova Dario Minieri would use his FPP points to buy a new Porsche.

PokerStars Class of 2001: SFCellman

While PokerStars celebrates its fifth anniversary, it is also celebrating the Class of 2001, the people who have been around since the very beginning and have stuck around to make PokerStars the biggest and best online poker site on the planet. I've tracked down a few of the old-timers. Over the next few days, I'll be bringing you some of their stories.

Five Questions with Jason "SFCellman" Reisdorfer

Q. How did you start playing at PokerStars

A. I had been playing online for over a year before PokerStars opened. However, once I gave PokerStars a try, the software and customer service impressed me a great deal. As the site's popularity grew, I shifted the majority of my play to PokerStars. It's been easy to stay loyal thanks to PokerStars superior format and service, as well as incredible game selection.

I've spent the past 3 or 4 years as a professional poker player, but I really only consider that time spent as an apprenticeship--learning the game, learning bankroll management, learning tourney play. I once heard Howard Lederer say that it really took him seven years to become a professional poker player, so I guess I'm getting close. I've got about $65,000 in lifetime cashes in MTT's on PokerStars, my biggest being a win in a $33 No-Limit Hold'em tourney with around 600 players for close to a $4,800 payday. I look to make a few more moves in some bigger buy-in events in the next couple years.

Q. What do you do in your offline life?

A. I'm in my mid-twenties and have lived most of my life in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. In college I studied Mathematics, with plans of becoming a high-school teacher until I discovered poker my freshman year. A little over two years ago, I married my beautiful wife, Erika...who was my high school sweetheart. We have a dog named Todd, and have plans of expanding our family in the next couple of years. I love sports, and play as much slowpitch softball as I can in the spring and summer. I enjoy backgammon, chess, Madden football and GoldenTee, as well as taking several trips throughout the year to some of the major poker tournaments.

Q. Has your game at PokerStars translated to any success in the live poker rooms?

A. Absoulutely...without a doubt. Ask any live poker pro, and I think they'll tell you that poker is about the math, and reading and knowing your oppenents tendancies. Well, when I sit down at a live game, and look around the table at many of the recreational players...I smile to myself, because I realize that I've played more hands of poker in one month on PokerStars, than they have probably played their whole lives in a casino. Since I've played so many hands, the math and situations are now just instincts at a live table, so I can spend much of my focus on reading my opponents. While they're busy trying to figure out how many outs they have, I'm planning my options on the next betting rounds...much like chess...looking two and three moves in advance. Had I not played so many hands online, I don't think I would be able to focus as much of my attention on my opponents tells and maximizing my decisions. I honestly can't recall the last live poker session that I didn't book a win...now if I could only figure out a way to multi-table at a cardroom?!?!? :)

Q. How has PokerStars helped you improve your game?

A. The beautiful thing about playing on PokerStars is that you can accumulate an enormous amount of data and information about your game, in such a compact amount of time...something that playing in a live casino would take you months, or even years to learn. PokerStars offers such a variety of game selection, that you can become so well rounded in so many different types of poker. Playing on PokerStars has improved my game tremendously over the past 5 years. I think the biggest advance in my game has been when games get shorthanded in a live game. A lot of my opponents don't adjust to the shorthanded style, and for me...having logged so many hands of 6-max has helped my confidence and results at shorthanded live games.

Q. Anything else you'd like to tell us?

A. Let me just take a moment and pump up the egos of Lee Jones and his outstanding crew. I have played on many other online poker sites, and the Customer Service people on PokerStars are simply top-notch. Their speedy replies and knowledge of the rules and the game of poker are a rarity among the other sites. It's also very obvious, that the management has put the right people in place in the marketing departments as well, because the players just keep coming and coming to the site. The VIP program is making great strides and I can't wait to see what they have in store for 2007. Bravo PokerStars, I look forward to another great year on the best site online!

PokerStars Class of 2001: Francis Naud

While PokerStars celebrates its fifth anniversary, it is also celebrating the Class of 2001, the people who have been around since the very beginning and have stuck around to make PokerStars the biggest and best online poker site on the planet. I've tracked down a few of the old-timers. Over the next few days, I'll be bringing you some of their stories.

Here's the thing about Francis Naud: He has been playing at PokerStars as long as just about anybody. What's more, as a Supernova member of the PokerStars VIP Club, he plays more than most people. Who is he? Well, that will be up to you to figure out. He doesn't mind that you know his real name. His screen name, however, will remain a secret.

Oh, and this is what he looks like:

So, he may not be the biggest of mystery men, but he is an old-timer here who embodies PokerStars history.

Back in 2001, Naud got word from a friend that there was a poker site just starting up with an interesting interface.

"I jumped in and never quit," Naud said.

Since then, Naud has been a regular player on PokerStars, with fond memories of every year.

"I remember one magic streak when starting my career on the site. I won two consecutive $200+15 MTTs back-to-back," he said. "Back in those days, the field of players was less impressive--a little more than 100 players. Still, it really gave me the kick that I needed to start my poker career."

Like many players, Naud's poker life didn't start off with lots of huge wins. After college, he went to work with his father.

"I worked pretty hard for my money and I lost a part of it in online poker," he said. "Trust me, I paid to learn!"

But poker was a passion for Naud. He didn't focus on his losses. He focused on what he knew he would win. And win he did.

"Pokertars is where I really developed my poker skills, online and live. I traveled the world playing live poker, paying for my trips with the money I could win out of both ring games and tournaments," he said. "In fact, I'm really better as an online poker player. Who knows, I still dream of a final table at a major live tournament for which I would pay the entry via a satellite that PokerStars offers on its site."

Thanks to Francis Naud for making PokerStars his online home. And Francis, I'll plan on seeing you at the final table of a live event very soon.

PokerStars Class of 2001: Ribs

While PokerStars celebrates its fifth anniversary, it is also celebrating the Class of 2001, the people who have been around since the very beginning and have stuck around to make PokerStars the biggest and best online poker site on the planet. I've tracked down a few of the old-timers. Over the next few days, I'll be bringing you some of their stories.

Graham "Ribs" Ribchester was one of the beta boys. In 2001, PokerStars invited several people to participate in beta freeroll tournaments in which players could win Frequent Player Points. Ribchester played happily and won his fair share of FPPs.

"I ended up using 10,000 FPPs to enter a few $2,000 prize pool freeroll tournaments," Ribchester said, and then joked, "Little did I know that if I had held onto that for a couple of years, when the system was revamped, it would have been worth a lot more."

These days, Ribchester is so dedicated to poker life, and PokerStars in particular, that he is often accused of being a walking advertising board. "I love poker merchandise, and I'm always wearing it," he said. "Literally over 300 days a year, I'm wearing Pokerstars clothes."

Ribchester in his PokerStars rugby and PokerStars Aston Martin Racing hat

Ribchester actually spends most of his time playing Omaha cash games where he has "happily grinded many tens of thousands of dollars sitting in cash games over the years." Despite his Omaha background, Ribchester has done well in some no-limit hold'em freerolls, including taking third place in the first-ever World Blogger Championship of Online Poker.

Ribchester's poker beginnings were not the stuff of fancy and frollicking, though. He explains it like this:

"My formal education...came to an abrupt halt when my father was paralyzed in a car accident. It meant I had to find an income for myself. So, I made the decision to start playing poker online in evenings while working a day job. I had been grinding away making $100 a week at low limits for 2 hours a day, but that changed to 12 hours a day soon after when the business I was working for got bought out and people got laid off."

Now, at age 29, Ribs makes his living playing poker. "When I started on Stars I was grinding the PLO8 $25 tables," he said. "PokerStars helped my game a lot simply by having low enough stakes for me to be able to learn the game."

When he first started out, things didn't go as well as he hoped. He lost about $1,100 online in the first three months of playing. He credits PokerStars with helping him turn it around.

"Stars helped...with lots of table selection. The other aspect of my game that was helped with Stars was the option for avatars. One of my strengths is my memory, and the ability to remember the people I play against as a picture rather than a name aids the memory process," he said.

Now, if you follow Ribs around PokerStars, you can find him playing some of the bigger games. He's one of fewer than ten members of the Class of 2001 who maintain Superova status in the PokerStars VIP club. As you'll see by the picture below, he doesn't shy away from big pots.

Ribchester rarely plays live poker. He said, "Why should I when I have PokerStars? I play six tables online simultaneously. Real life poker just bores me to tears with how slow it is, especially Omaha. I am a member of the Grosvenor Casino in Salford, UK. But if I do play, it's only a social occasion."

When he's not cleaning up at the Omaha tables, Ribchester will occasionally hold cancer charity tournaments on PokerStars.

Thanks to Graham "Ribs" Ribchester for spending the last five years with PokerStars. Here's to another great and profitable five years.

Santa Claus hits PokerStars on Christmas Eve

It doesn't really matter when you sit down at a poker table. You're always looking for somebody who is throwing a party--just giving it away. Sometimes you get lucky and a whale is spewing chips all over the table. Sometimes you have to work a little bit harder. Tonight, on this 2006 Christmas Eve, there were a lot of people who didn't have to work at all. And who do they have to thank?

Well, Santa Claus, of course.

While there were rumors and hopes that suggested Santa might be in the vicinity, nobody knew for sure until a little after 8pm ET tonight when Santa himself sat down at a table and said, in essence, "I'm about to give away a lot of money."

The jolly old elf pops down the chimney of a PokerStars table

Over the course of the next several hours, Santa Claus emptied thousands and thousands of dollars out of his big sack of goodies. At times, it seemed the PokerStars players couldn't believe their good fortune. For some players, the concept of Santa showing up and giving them a holiday gift just seemed...well, too good to be true. Santa even offered some sage advice to players: "It's better to be good than lucky...because miracles usually happen on 34th Street, not on Fifth Street."

[Note: The above received a couple of groans in the chat bar. Santa could only respond, "Sometimes I sleigh myself..."]

Come Monday, it may all seem like a dream to the good boys and girls on PokerStars. They may wonder if, in fact, it ever happened at all. As one who witnessed it, I can only say...

"Yes, Virginia..."

Happy Holidays, everyone.

Santa Claus coming to town?

Okay, I'm sworn to secrecy on this one. It's like MI-6 and CIA kind of secrecy. If I were to fully explain, chances are you wouldn't see my byline here anymore. Chances are you wouldn't see me anymore.

That said, I've been given permission to say the following:

There is a very real possibility Santa Claus is coming to town on Christmas Eve. And by town, I, of course, mean PokerStars.

I've said too much already. The walls have ears. And reindeer.

That is all.

PokerStars Fifth Anniversary Celebration

PokerStars is celebrating its 5th anniversary and the site is inviting everyone to join the fun. Over the next two weeks, PokerStars be giving away lots of money for its Fifth Anniversary Celebration.

Every one million hands dealt in a cash ring game starting with hand 7,559,000,000 at about 6 PM ET today (December 22), you can win up to $4,400 based on your VIP level and the game limit you play. The way it works, you'll be playing in a game and if you are fortunate enough to play the winning hand, you stand to win quite a bit of money.

PokerStars will also be offering tons of Team PokerStars freerolls. There will be several freerolls a day with prize pools of $1,000 (10 FPP entry) and $5,000 (50 FPP entry). In these freerolls, you're going to find a lot of Team PokerStars players. Knock one of them out, and PokerStars will give you a ticket to a $215 Sunday Million event.

For all of you who like deposit bonuses, PokerStars isn't holding back during this celebration. Everyone is eligible for a 25% reload bonus, up to $150 on a $600 deposit. Full details can be found on the PokerStars bonus page.

Perhaps the coolest thing about this event is the Class of 2001 Reunion freerolls. PokerStars is inviting anyone with an active account opened in 2001 to play in one of two $25,000 freerolls. I'm hoping to track down a few of these people who have been with PokerStars since the beginning and tell you their stories. If you've been playing at PokerStars since 2001, shoot me an e-mail at the link on the right with the subject line, "Urgent: Class of 2001."

So, the next couple of weeks look to be pretty fun on PokerStars. Happy Holidays to all, and Happy Fifth Anniversary to PokerStars!

Visit the PokerStars 5th Anniversary Celebration page for a freeroll schedule and complete celebration details.

Joe Hachem wins WPT Five Diamond Classic at Bellagio

No one, and I mean no one, has ever accused Joe Hachem of being a fluke World Series of Poker Champion. His multiple appearances at major final tables in the past 18 months have proven the 2005 WSOP champ has the kind of game to win championships, not to mention lots and lots of money. It's only been a few months since Hachem nearly picked up his second WSOP bracelet in the 2006 WSOP.

Now, before the end of 2006, Hachem has proven to the world that he not only has the game to go deep, but also has the stuff to be a champion once again.

Photo courtesy of FlipChip at LasVegasVegas.com

It took Hachem just four hours to plow through the WPT Bellagio Five Diamond Classic Championship final table tonight, dispatching with five tough foes, including 2005 Player of the Year, Daniel Negreanu.

For his win, Hachem picked up more than $2.1 million and a seat in the $25,000 WPT Championship this spring.

As a guy who has had the pleasure to be around Hachem during many of his great tournament appearances, it feels pretty good to see the guy take down another title. No one ever been able to call Hachem a fluke, because he never gave them time to do so. The man has the heart, game, and talent of a champion and he showed it this week at Bellagio.

Congrats, Joe, on a much deserved win. See you in the Bahamas.

Joe Hachem makes WPT final table

After clawing and gnashing his way through a 15-hour day of tournament poker, Team PokerStars' 2005 World Series of Poker champion, Joe Hachem, has made it down to the final six of the 2006 Five Diamond World Poker Classic championship event.

Hachem, seen above during play on Monday, played some tough poker and made some even tougher laydowns on his way to the televised final table. On Tuesday, after some much needed rest, Hachem will face off against some formidable foes, including Daniel Negreanu.

Hachem's chip stack puts him right in the middle of the remaining players and gives him a real shot at taking down the $2.1 million first prize.

Good luck, Joe!

Joe Hachem making a run for the diamonds

On a regular day, the kind that sees me working in the field, I'm sitting in a chair near Joe Hachem, trying not to move, trying not to breathe, trying not to do anything to derail the train that Joe Hachem can be. When the 2005 World Series of Poker champion gets in a winning zone, it can be like watching a way-too-healthy animal on the hunt. When the cards are in the air, there's not much talking to the champion. He plays and he plays hard.

This week, however, Hachem decided to go into hunting animal mode without giving me a heads up. For the past few days, he has been running roughshod over the field at the 2006 Five Diamond World Poker Classic World Poker Tour event. At this writing, Hachem sits atop the field of the 20 or so remaining players and has a massive chip lead to boot.

While there's a part of me that wishes I could be railing Hachem right now, there is another part that feels content not to be the jinx that could bring down the champion.

So, good luck Joe. We're rooting for you, from afar.

Moneymaker Millionaire Finalists

We're getting a first look at some of 27 people who will be fighting in the Moneymaker Millionaire finals in the Bahamas. I'll update this page as we uncover more on the finalists.

Moneymaker Millionaire Player Profiles

David "japaneezer" Carthy--22-year-old college student at the Unversity of Florida who has played online and live poker off and on for the last 3-5 years. Quote: "Chris Moneymaker...He's made countless people leave their day jobs!"

Donald "donfairplay" Craig--26-year-old California player who picked up poker after watching Chris Moneymaker and Greg Raymer win the World Series of Poker. After reading a few books, he managed to qualify for the 2006 WSOP through PokerStars. Quote: "I loved watching Moneymaker play in the 2003 series. Chris Moneymaker personalizes the dream for us small stakes players (I'm a $.10/$.25 player). I remember a billboard of him at the 2006 WSOP Main Event with him in his day-job clothes and the caption reading something like 'you could quit your day-job if you win.'"

Richard "KURN" DiLonardo--55-year-old business consultant from New Jersey who has been playing poker his entire life and focused his later studies on the pre-WSOP writings of Greg Raymer. A contestant on "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire," and now a finalist in the Moneymaker Millionaire freeroll, DiLonardo has had two shots at $1 million in the span of five months. He speaks five languages, spent ten years as a chef in Boston, and once rode a motorcycle across the United States. Quote: "Chris is a great story, and he's definitely the single biggest factor in poker being what it is today."

Tim "Ironwine79" Eagle--26-year-old sales manager from St. Louis, MO who grew up playing penny-ante poker with his family. Humble to a fault, Eagle refuses to brag on himself and defers to his mother when asked about his successes. Quote: "I think he [Moneymaker] definitely kick-started the everyman poker player taking the game a little more seriously."

John "Hafe" Haefele--51-year-old maintenance supervisor from Canada. His online play is almost exclusively $10 PokerStars sit & go tournaments. Since qualifying for the Moneymaker Millionaire finals, he has played in local Lions Club charity tournaments in Ontario. Quote: "I think Chris Moneymaker, along with some of the other winners of high level poker tournaments, has captured the imagination of audiences around the world. The idea that someone besides an athlete whose physical gifts preclude comparison with most 'ordinary people' could compete and win huge money prizes against a field of thousands is the type story that is very easy to enjoy."

Michael "Halp1" Halprin--44-year-old marketing and entertainment professional from Florida who spends most of his time making sure other people have fun. He plans to reverse that life philosophy in his quest to win the first prize in the Moneymaker Millionaire. Quote: "I respect Moneymaker for his big win and admire what he has accomplished. As far as what he has done for the world of poker, can you say EXPLOSION?"

Donald "Iweedmanl" Hill--37-year-old sawmill worker from Canada who picked up poker by watching on television and hopes to use any big Moneymaker Millionaire winnings to start a business of his own.

David "kamuflaza" Juhart--26-year-old horse trainer from Slovenia

Boomer "malibu44" Lawrence--35-year-old poker player from Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada who considers himself more of a cash game player than a tournament player. He says people routinely find it fascinating that he makes a living in the non-glamorous, high-stress world of cash game poker. After taking care of his family, Lawrence hopes to use any big winnings from the Moneymaker Millionaire to open a shelter for abused animals. Quote: "Chris has just shown that anyone, no matter how much or little skill you have, can win a poker tournament. The reason it has been such a big success over the past few years, is because anyone, and I mean anyone can just walk into a poker tournament, go on a nice run of cards and walk away a millionaire."

Quillan "Quillan" Nagel--30-year-old masters student in International Affairs from Canada who started playing poker as a child. He started playing seriously 18 months ago, during which time his biggest win was $2,700 in a $10 rebuy event. A man of many different hats, he was once a professional ballet dancer and virtual arms dealer in an online video game. He is now married to a professional actress and has a two-month-old daughter. Quote: "Moneymaker showed the value of satellites! He also showed the world that anyone could win, and caused a dramatic increase in poker's popularity. Just look at the WSOP numbers since he won."

Paul "21paul21" Phillips--35-year-old rural postal carrier from Weatherford, Texas who boasts a black belt in Tae-Kwon-Do and spends as much time taking risks as he can. From boxing, to skydiving, to roller coasters, the guy will do anything to get his blood pumping. Quote: "Moneymaker is the reason I started playing on Poker Stars and started playing online period. Seeing his commercials a few years ago is the reason I started playing."

Phillip "GOLDBRICK56" Sears--50-year-old bricklayer from Canada who lives a simple life of working, playing poker, playing pool, and playing chess. Ever-dedicated to his 16-year old daughter, he hopes he can use some Moneymaker Millionaire winnings to change her life as much as she changed his. After that, he hopes to sit back and take a deep breath. Quote: "Chris Moneymaker was the first to show this could happen to regular folks."

Robert "BobbysBabe2" Skanes--26-year-old customer service representative from Canada who is ultra-competitive and has been playing poker for more than ten years.

John "modelx" Whitlock--37-year-old flooring installer from Nova Scotia who picked up poker within the past few years and has achieved an impressive amount of tournament success since then. Quote: "Moneymaker showed that an average Joe can become a millionaire and help others do the same."

Jerry "herschelw" Watterson III--24-year-old fulltime poker player from Jackson, FL, who started playing poker in low-stakes wild card games at University of North Florida. In the past six months, he has final tabled two major tournaments on PokerStars.com for more than $29,000 in earnings. He was twice elected to student body president of the University of North Florida, an office that required him to manage a $2.5 million budget. Quote: "I read Chris' book. I found it fascinating to read as to how an average guy can take on the best in the poker world and win it all. It simply shows that with a little skill, a bit of luck, and a solid game plan anyone has a shot to win it all if it's their day."

Michael "live4yng" Young--21-year-old college student from Springfield, PA, introduced to poker by his college buddies. Before entering the Moneymaker Millionaire freeroll, his best ever tournament finish was fourth place in a $5 buy-in PokerStars event that earned him $400. A Computer Science major and English minor, Young can solve a Rubicks cube in three minuntes and has written a children's book. He is currently working on writing a novel and a feature film screenplay. Quote: "Moneymaker really opened up the world of online poker, showing that with the right opportunities, an average person has the capabilities not only to make it to the World Series of Poker, but to win it. This is one of the coolest opportunities that has come my way, and I'm really looking forward to playing."

joedi20 wins free Aston Martin DBS at PokerStars

PokerStars player joedi20 may not have a license to kill, but he's going to ride like he does.

PokerStars was able to round up a car just like James Bond drove in Casino Royale. Instead of giving it to Lee Jones to drive around, it decided to give it away to its players. For the past several weeks, players have been winning their way into the Aston Martin freeroll final. Today, after more than five hours of battle, joedi20 won a brand new 2007 Aston Martin DBS, courtesy of the PokerStars Aston Martin freeroll. More than 1,600 PokerStars players qualified for the freeroll, but only one could win the one-of-a-kind car.

Congratulations to joedi20 for becoming PokerStars' version of 007.

Last weekend for PCA and Aston Martin Freeroll

This weekend is likely the biggest one left in 2006 for PokerStars players. The two biggest remaining events of the year will finish up before the start of next week.

On Saturday, everyone who has qualified for the Aston Martin Freeroll will fight it out for their share of the $300,000 prize pool, including first place, a 2007 Aston Martin DBS, just like James Bond drives in Casino Royale. The Aston Martin Freeroll kicks off at 3:00pm ET on Saturday.

On Sunday, PokerStars will host the last open satellite for the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure in the Bahamas. Satellites are always running for the $650 qualifier to the biggest poker tournament in the Caribbean. The last chance qualifier kicks of at 6:30pm ET under the Events/WPT tabs.

Good luck to everyone who will be fighting in both of the big events this weekend.

Thomas0804 and his lucky PokerStars shirt

We all have little pieces of luck we carry around with us. I'm fickle about mine. I've given away lucky money bands and poker chips from winning games after they, er, let me down. Right now, I'm carrying a piece of red yarn my two-year-old son gave me as a present right before I did well in a tournament.

Even if you're not the superstitous sort (which, honestly, I am not), you'll have to appreciate this little story that someone passed on to me.

PokerStars player Thomas0804 ended up playing in Dublin on the European Poker Tour. As you're likely aware by now, PokerStars sponsors all of the EPT events and is well represented at all the venues. While Thomas0804 was in Dublin, he ended up getting hold of a PokerStars shirt. As it was described to me, the shirt "became kind of his mojo for live poker tournaments."

Over the weekend, Thomas0804 was in Leipzig playing in yet another poker tournament. Once again, he wore his lucky PokerStars shirt. Sure enough, with the power of his shirt, he made his way all the way to the final table.

Now, I'd like to say Thomas0804 won the whole shooting match, but, as it turns out, he'd brought something with him that was even more powerful than his PokerStars shirt -- his mother. Indeed, once the game was down to three players, Thomas0804's own mother busted him.

There's probably a lesson in here somewhere, but I'm not going to venture to find it. Regardless, congratulations to Thomas0804 for his recent success...and, well, congratulations to Mom as well.
